From the article: About 30 victims of the former Mormon bishop’s $20 million fraud packed a federal courtroom in downtown Denver for more than seven hours of testimony and arguments.

News sources have reported that $1.4 billion worth of fraud has occurred among Lds members in the past few years.

From the article: Krieger gave Merriman a harsher prison term than federal guidelines required, citing his betrayal of family, friends and LDS Church members, and the risk that he might reoffend. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said last year that Merriman had been excommunicated.

The Chargers should have traded this jerk. I hate his “Lights Out” sack dance. He had one or two good seasons and that’s all. He is always getting into trouble off the field. First Tila Tequila and now this. Sheeesh.

Too bad he couldn’t have just printed enough money to pay off his investors...

One of the very first Mormon threads I ever entered on Free Republic had exactly this sort of thing as a target.

I provided my understanding of one sort of fraud perpetrated against Mormons by members of a different church who infiltrate stakes ~ and found there were SOME FREEPERS who thought this a totally unwelcome and anti-Mormon intrusion.

They're Still Here guys ~ and it will take the form of a "sound investment" ~ either in property (Leer Jets) or paper (bonds) ~ or a "special tithe that will pay off in future years" (some sort of insurance policy as I undertand it).

Don't give the crooks a chance.

The stake house is a great networking opportunity that can be a difficult tool to resist when you see it in action.

I guess this doesn’t mean anything... “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said last year that Merriman had been excommunicated. “

Well at least he has a good resume builder as a future Anti-Mormon author!

Admitted Ponzi-schemer Shawn Merriman was sentenced Tuesday to 12½ years in prison during an emotion-filled hearing that included an appeal from his mother, one of his victims, to “make him pay”....Merriman pleaded guilty in December to one count of mail fraud after surrendering to authorities in March 2009. He admitted to taking money from 67 investors and using it to fund a lavish lifestyle and to pay off initial investors with latter investors’ money.

The government seized roughly $4 million in fine art, including Rembrandt prints, as well as antique cars, sports memorabilia and animal trophies collected on safari trips....The assets remain in the government’s hands but eventually will be auctioned, with proceeds going to victims.

A big question, Mormon officials say, is how much, if any, of the contributions paid to the church were the result of fraud, Farah said. And if so, to whom should the money be returned....He used part of his proceeds to amass hundreds of works by Renaissance artists and works by Rembrandt, displaying them in churches or church-sponsored facilities. It's possible, some LDS members say, that his exhibits lured other donations to the church merely out of appreciation....

That’s a crime and feel bad for the victims. He deserves a harsh punishment just like ANYONE who takes advantage of a position of trust whether it be through a church, organization, etc. There are far too many criminals who take advantate of people who trust them.

Of course we know the purpose for posting this incident.
It’s to show somehow the Mormon church is corrupt, members are stupid or something else to fit the anti-Mormon agenda.

Of course he was excommunicated, its a felony. Felons cant be rebaptized until their civil rights have been restored, according to the Handbook of Instructions I have.

Makes you wonder how many Mormons continue to contribute to high end living for the Mormon leadership....they do allot of investment..real-estate both commercial and otherwise. Oh were they to open their books to the underlings! Their would be a grand Exodus from the LDS.....Oops I forgot...they would believe whatever reasoning the leadership might give if that was revealed as they already believe what they should not.
