Great article by a gifted Catholic writer (with a super sense of humor) ... h/t to my friend in California, Jim Aroo, for telling me about Rachel's writings ...

Veils, ever so slowly, are starting to make a comeback.

Anyone here old enough to remember attending Mass before school (parochial school of course) and not having a scarf to wear, so substituting a kleenex?

I like wearing a veil. It feels sheltered and enclosed when praying after communion, just me and the Presence.

2. There's zero temptation to wear anything grungy, sleeveless, or low cut-- it'd look weird with a veil.
I get upset sometimes with the dress (or lack thereof) of so many at Mass, yet I never see this type of disrespect at a TLM.

Wouldn’t a veil normally cover the face???

not having a scarf to wear, so substituting a kleenex? . . . if the nuns didn't catch you! ;-)

The sins of prior generations led God to chastise us with Vatican II.

Not these. There are lots of kinds of veils: brides (some anyway) walk down the aisle with a layer of tulle from the veil over the face; widows' weeds (which I've only seen in movies or read about) have veils that cover the face.
The veils she's talking about are just triangles of lace -- two are shown in the picture if you'll scroll up. The pictures are from behind, but you can see (especially the girl on the left) that the face isn't covered.

Here's the
Technically Permissible but Inappropriate Substitutes for the Mantilla from one always-interesting Shrine of the Holy Whapping website:
1. Doily
2. Baseball cap with "I (Heart) Hans Kung" on it
3. Black bandanna with skulls and crossbones (unless it's November 2)
4. Wig (unsuccessful marketing campaign: "The Stealth Mantilla.")
5. Balloon animal hat
6. Cardinal's galero
7. Hard hat with beer cans strapped to the sides.
8. Phrygian cap (1789 was a bad year)
9. Rubber Nixon mask (JFK might be permissible in some circles)
10. Spiked helmet (unless you are a girl Hohenzollern, and if so, my apologies.)
11. Lampshade
12. Ninja facemask
13. Urban Sombrero
14. Souvenir Statue of Liberty crown
15. Whatever that thing Subcommandante Marcos is always wearing
16. Man's toupee
17. Inverted tupperware container
18. Plastic shopping bag
19. Full-body gorilla costume
20. Deep-sea diving bell
Also, if you have no hair, a mantilla is unnecessary: so please, no using double-sided tape to stick it to your baby's head.

Catholic girl’s school here. Blue and white uniforms, but white uniforms and white gloves on First Friday. Saddle shoes. Raiding Holy Wafers when running wild.
To: Mrs. Don-o
LOL! In our school, we were pushing it dangerously by wearing a headscarf! (Remember the uproar when Jackie Kennedy attended a summer Mass on the Cape wearing a headscarf? Nothing to what we got!)

And responding “deo gratias” (Thanks be to God) to “ite missa est” (go the Mass is ended) with more feeling than one should! Oh, we were so bad!
