A Simple Way to Pray around the Advent Wreath

Prayers for Every Day During Advent

For many Catholic families, the Advent wreath is a treasured tradition. In the darkest days of winter, as we gather around the dinner table, the candles remind us of the light of Christ. This is the perfect time for family prayer.

The suggested Scripture passages are taken from one of the Mass readings for the day. The accompanying prayers can be read by different members of the family on alternating days. On Christmas Day, you can continue your family prayer time by removing the three purple and one pink candle and replacing them with white or red candles. We hope these prayers will prepare everyone in your family for Christmas. May the Lord bless you as together you raise your voices and hearts to him.

Father, Jesus, Holy Spirit, we want to look for you this Advent. We give this time to you and ask you to surprise us with your presence and your love. Any time of the day or night, we want to know your touch and receive your word into our hearts.

Advent is the beginning of the litrugical year for Catholics.

Christ has to come into the world first, right?

So, we as Catholics, prepare for that pilgrimage to Bethlehem with St. Joseph and the Blessed Virgin Mary with four weeks or prayer-peration — the priest’s new word this morning in his sermon.

We pray, some will fast, all will give up a little something — it’s sort of like a mini Lent, but it’s only 28 days instead of the 40 days of Lent from Ash Wednesday to Easter.

BTW, did you know that many Protestants go to Catholic Churches on Ash Wednesday to receive the ashes on their foreheads? Churches are always jam-packed at all the Masses.

Advent is also a prpeparation for the Second Coming of Christ.

It's "jot or tittle," not "dot or title".

And we're not adding anything to the Bible; we're actually living it. The liturgical year recapitulates salvation history. We just ended up the year hearing about the second coming of Christ and the end of all things.

Today the year, and the story of salvation, begins again. Advent -- from a Latin word meaning "coming" or "coming toward" -- is the prolog to the coming of the Messiah. It's represented in your Bible by the part called the "Old Testament".

So sorry that you do not want to prepare for the coming of the Lord, God made man, the Christ Child.

Use your concordance and find the word “coming” — you will find advent in the “coming of the Lord.”

Use your imagination. Instead of “Advent,” think “pregnancy.” If all goes well, women (including Jesus’s mother) are pregnant for nine months, give or take a week or so. One of the ladies in my congregation is expecting her first baby on December 15. She’s at what I call the “hippo” state, where you can barely move; being about 5 feet tall makes it even more difficult.

Cristina hasn’t spent the last 8-1/2 months pretending nothing was going to change in her life. She’s been praying. And she’s been sick. And she’s been sleepy. She’s been receiving gifts from her family and friends and church members, because the birth of a first child changes everything in your life and your husband’s life and your parents life ... on out through the community, because we’re all family. I hope to be buying cute pink frocks for Cristina’s daughter years from now.

Jesus was born. Maybe it wasn’t on whatever passed for December 25 in the calendar at the time, but who cares? He was born, and it changed everything. I’m actually in a minority, because I think it was His conception, the moment of His taking on humanity, that really matters. 11 pregnancies ... life changes at *that* moment, even before you begin to feel vaguely unwell and “here we go again.”

But, whatever the calendar date chosen, to every year re-prepare for the way everything changed ... to every year re-start being the person you should be because Emmanu-el ... what could be the problem with that?

"Advent" comes from the Latin word, "Adventus". It is commonly translated as "coming"
