I still remember when "the wall came down," and, overnight, the dark motif that overshadowed my generation's childhood was gone. We no longer dreaded global thermonuclear war. I suspect, upon reflection, that this credible dread was one reason the baby boomer's were a little bit crazy. If there is no future, then nihilistic pleasure-seeking makes sense.

It's sad, but many of God's dear people seemed to have become addicted to dread. Rather than rejoicing in God's triumph over Soviet Communism, too many of our dear peers just started desperately seeking other villains to grovel before. Now, does that make sense?

As Julian the Apostate died, he hurled a handful of his own blood at the sky and snarled "Thou hast conquered, O Galilean." The Soviet and Chinese Communists also took on the Lord Jesus Christ -- and lost. Russian school kids study the Bible and Christianity today. A Chinese Christian entrepreneur set up a research center -- with government backing -- to apply Christianity to business issues.

Now, Islam looks menacing. But God is bigger than Islam. The God-hating ideology I worry about is the state religion of America, a smug secularism that recognizes no power higher than "The" Government. We can't see it, since it's part of the warp and woof of our lives -- but God sees, and God hates, this proud contempt for Him.

America's secular humanism, and Islam, both ]have an appointment with God behind the woodshed of history. What can we do NOW to develop credible and explicitly Christian alternatives to those two ways of framing and defining reality? Work is in progress, reformation is afoot, and days of opportunity lay ahead for those who refuse to regard the status quo as normal.
