Church Update on Response to Japan Earthquake and Tsunami

14 March 2011 — Salt Lake City

News Release

As the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami continues to unfold, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is assessing how it will best provide relief. News reports indicate that the death toll from the earthquake and tsunami in Japan is nearing 3,000 and will likely continue to rise. The majority of casualties in Japan are expected to be from the tsunami rather than the earthquake. Tens of thousands more are homeless and millions are without power. The government of Japan has mobilized thousands of troops, planes and ships for a large-scale emergency response operation.

The Church’s First Presidency made the following statement regarding the disaster:

We express our love and support to the people of Japan as they deal with this terrible tragedy. Our prayers, and the prayers of millions of Latter-day Saints across the world, are with them as they begin to recover from this disaster.

Relief Aid
Communication and transportation is difficult in the most affected areas, but local Church leaders are currently discussing with government and humanitarian organizations ways to provide assistance.

It is likely Church members have been directly impacted by the quake, and local Church leaders are working tirelessly to account for them. Approximately 95% of the Latter-day Saints in the affected areas have been contacted, and initial reports indicate there are no confirmed deaths; however, there is limited information on the status of members from the most devastated areas.

Church Buildings
The Church has received several inquiries regarding the condition of its temple in Tokyo and can confirm that there is no significant damage to the building.  While we know that some buildings have sustained varying degrees of damage, Church leaders in the affected areas are assessing the condition of other Church buildings.

All members are going to worry about the missionaries, and we don’t want any local Japanese people worrying about the missionaries if we can worry about them. We want them to take care of themselves and their own families as they can.”

So we can glean from this that LDS are worrying about their missionaries and the Japanese people can take care of themselves. How does this demonstrate LDS relief aid? Is this just another demonstration that LDS only help their own? Apparently, they are leaving the Japanese to fend for themselves.

I see that a lot of very tiny people are providing their aid to the Japanese people by belittling the efforts of others, and doing it from the safety and comfort of their computer chairs.

On post #76, I highlighted this quote of yours and pinpointed a thread on Sunday night that belittled Obama about his response to Japan. But look...just now this newly posted thread: Obama Fiddles While the World Burns

Ya better rush into that thread while you can, RBranha re: if anybody critiques Obama's aid provision "to the Japanese people by belittling the efforts of" the Obama admin -- "and doing it from the safety and comfort of their computer chairs."

We'd like to see how consistent you are in defending those who provide aid provision to Japan...and how consistent you are in opposing those who "belittle the [aid] efforts of others."

C'mon...RBranha...we'd like to see you rush into that thread & start claiming numerous FREEPERS there as being "tiny people" who have "small minds" like you've done on this thread.

Or is it that you are particular in defending only some from their critiques of how they are aiding Japan...thereby showing how hypocritical, two-faced, and inconsistent you are...yet again.

Tell us: If you won't defend Obama on that thread re: Japan response, why not? What makes the Mormon church so sacro-sanct to you re: their response to Japan crisis...?

Wow! Gambling relief dollars for prizes!

(I guess we can now truly see Nevada's impact on its neighboring Utah...perhaps pro-gambling Mormon leader Harry Reid suggested this!)

Well, this is ALL consistent with Mormon theology. See, temple Mormons do good works to become gods -- to enter the highest level of the Mormon kingdom. So all their good works are tinged with this same "boomerang" theme: They do good works; it accumulates to their godhood account. And so, a selfish motivation always looms at the root of anything a temple Mormon does.

There's always a spiritual "kickback" in place.

Trumpeting is not allowed!!!!

Calling for people to help out is not trumpeting. But what ever gets you to sleep at night. God knows the truth.

You know this comment applies not only to those you label as "tiny people" with "small minds" on this thread, but not this yet another thread -- started right after the last response I had to post #32.

Strange. I looked @ the first 48 replies to As World Burns, Obamas Take Kids on Taxpayer Funded Rio Spring Break Vacay...and I didn't see you criticize any of the posters who were critiquing Obama's response to Japan.

Then I looked @ the first dozen responses to Obama Fiddles While the World Burns and didn't see you label those posters as "tiny people" because of their "armchair quarterbacking" aimed @ commenting upon a financial response to Japan.

Where's your consistency?

Why have you only criticized religious free speech on this topic -- while you've given a free pass to the political commentators on this same topic? And here all thru this thread, you've been giving religious posters a hard time for criticizing anybody; and yet you've let loose with a string of criticisms.

You've yet to explain how you got some "license" to criticize others' religious speech, but you've frowned upon others doin' the same thing as if you were some Highway Patrol guy pullin' over somebody goin' some speed you subjectively just didn't like.

How many more inconsistent gaps will be detected by your posts and your very loud absentee posts on certain threads critical of the response to Japan?

Many of us on FR would appreciate it if you were to get a blog and use it to obsess over the mormons instead of doing it here.

like the F.R.A.M. Site?

(Ah, the old "if-it-aint-the-official-Mormon-Web-site-we-can-excuse-it-away-trick"...all as certain Mormon Freeper posters will routinely link to five or more unofficial Mormon Web sites minus BlueMoose ever chirpin' in his disclaimer about those sites...hmm...)

Of course, what BlueMoose doesn't tell us is that when you go to the Web site in question, you'll find the following content page: Bishop Storehouse LocationsDistribution Centers Click on a region below to locate a Distribution Center for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Source: Lds Bishop Storehouse locations

Furthermore, another page from the Web site provides linkages to about 250 Mormon Web sites...showing it's in THE central hub of Mormonism central (vs. the fringe locale that BlueMoose might have you believe).

I went to their Web page and actually they have a LOT of prizes beyond the above -- only it's in the form of free emergency kits for Mormons. All Mormons have to do is get other Mormons & Mormon leaders to make purchases from them -- to use the disaster as a reminder to pump up sales for LDS Emergency Resources!

Ya wanna know what's also weird about these Mormons? Look at how they even brazenly billed doing the same thing when the Haiti disaster struck? The Moral Bribe: Paying Families to Help Chile and Haiti Disaster Victims
Source:

Google indicates that they were set up March 14 to bill it the same way re: Japan...see 2nd hit at The Moral Bribe: Paying Families to Help the Tsunami & Earthquake...

Only as of March 15, while you indeed still get the Web site, the page has been given a different URL.

So these Mormons admit to "bribing" Mormons into "good works" for Japan by offering some of them a type of lottery prize if they buy an Lds Emergency Resources "lottery ticket."

Hmmm. I didn't know the Mormon church was into gambling and promoting gambling look-alikes -- all for a supposed "good cause." (Sounds like the gambling industry's wedge into state lotteries where some of the $ goes for a "good cause" like "education").

And here the Mormon church turns ethics on its head by justifying bribery and gambling as "moral."

Are these non damaged buildings being opened for the homeless? Are the kitchens in these building fixing food for the hungry? Are the storage rooms being opened to distribute clothing to the freezing? Well, at least the buildings are safe.

Uh. "NO comment," says the Mormon church.

I just scanned this Monday article from the Deseret News: Needs, safety issues in question as Mormon church plans next steps in Japan for members, missionaries

No mention at all of Japanese general population. Only Lds missionaries. Only Lds members. At the end of the article it mentions neighborhood shelters. But instead of it being available to all, it says it's designated for Mormon missionaries: "Each neighborhood has an emergency center where ALL THE MISSIONARIES have been instructed to go in such an emergency. They provide safe shelter, water, and other basic needs," the secretary's report says.

ALL: If you live in Utah & a crisis hits, don't count upon Mormons to be "neighborly" with their stocked goods.
