Who will pray for Christopher Hitchens?

With Christopher Hitchens teetering on the brink of eternity, revisit this query from 2007:

Do we have any prayer volunteers for Christopher Hitchens? He’s the self -proclaimed “atheist/anti-theist,” and stunningly clever wordsmith. He leapfrogged puzzled agnosticism to a pledged rebellion against God.

He’ll be a tough turn-around, so thick is his iron-clad ignorance of the divine.

In a recent Newsweek he cynically dissects Mother Teresa’s dark theological struggles, a postscript to his derisive 1995 book, “The Missionary Position: Mother Teresa in Theory and Practice.” A week ago he was a featured speaker for an Atheist Alliance conference in Washington DC.

Hitchens’ latest book, “God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything,” maligns the devoted, be their god Creator or counterfeit. “Holy books,” including the Bible, are “mythological morality tales” and he suggests any religious training is child-abuse.

You are correct. It is “faith” that matters just as faith is what keeps Darwinism alive. There is no real proof of evolution either. The so called proof is so full of holes it looks like Swiss Cheese.

I have been, and continue to pray for Hitch. I hope very much that he will come to know and accept God’s love.

Hell, I hope he finally hears God’s voice in his ear.

“If praying for a sick child, sick mother, or sick friend who loves God (instead of this ass) makes me a “bad Christian” then so be it.”

I was a self satisfied self centered ass who thought “religion was a way for old ladies and cripples to feel they had a stake in the game”. If anybody prayed for me I’m damn grateful. Hearing the voice of the Holy Spirit took a while for me.

Of course, how can I dispute what you think?

Hitchens is wrong. It is right to pray that he sees the light and repents. Christ has borne the burden, and God will forgive.

Why do people who look forward to eternal bliss after death pray to have their lives extended?

..because the greatest gift God gave us, with the exception of his Son, is our life.

Is your life a greater gift than heaven? Is the value of your life dependent on its length? I’m not talking about deliberately cutting it short, just wondering why pray for its extension.

The most effective witnesses for Christ are often those who oppose Him the fiercest. I pray Mr. Hitchens has his own road to Damascus moment.

Well, I am hoping to live eternity in Heaven.

Why pray for its extention? To finish the race, to praise him all the days of my life. Who knows when the Lord is finish with us.

I’m old enough to see that the end is not too many years ahead, and I do not pray for extension. I assume that the lord will be done with me when he sees fit to let me die. I think that praying to put that time off is to question his judgement.

I would prefer to be an Atheist facing judgement than one who has caused many to leave Christ.

Yeah, I seem to remember Jesus mentioning something about millstones, in that instance.

years ago, I watched Hitchens in an interview with Judith Regan. He discussed some details of his mother’s suicide when he was a boy, and almost cried during the interview.

I’ve been praying for him since that time. That was before I was aware of his antagonism against God, so it’s not as if I’m trying to convert him.

He is an honest man, but his rage against God reminds me of my oldest adopted son’s rage on those who tried to help him: he projected his anger on us, and on God, over his birth mother’s death...

So I pray for the healing solace of God’s mercy on his hurt.

I have and will pray for him.

LORD please forgive him his terrible sins against you. Please show him the truth about Jesus and give him the courage to believe. In Jesus Holy Name, Amen.

I will pray for him also because his brother Peter is a Christian. I always hope for Christians to have their families in heaven with them. This is one of the greatest gifts. How very and incredibly sad and awful it would be to find someone you love is not there.
