This gallery depicts almost every BYU athlete we found with an honor code incident since 1993. (Certain players have been excluded to protect our sources.) The information in the gallery comes from media reports, BYU profiles, and interviews with athletes. It is by no means definitive. Many of these incidents were shrouded in secrecy. Many of the athletes could not be reached to confirm what we learned. If we have included bad data whether due to inaccurate news stories, the faulty memories of interview subjects, or our own error we are happy to correct it. If readers can help fill in any empty categories, we are happy to update.
For some reason, author Luke O'Brien wrote: Many of these incidents were shrouded in secrecy.
Hmm...wonder why those incidents were so "shrouded?"
My guess is that it wasn't anyone's business but BYU and the student. Very decent of BYU to keep private matters private and not publicly embarrass the students involved.
Black basketball player broke the BYU homor code, No sex before marriage and bragged about it to his team mates/
Before the NCAA playoffs the guy, who was very good, was blackballed.
Some say it had to be Racist or some such crap.
That about it everyone???
Friday Afternoon Mormon Bash !! Woohoo !!
Interesting stuff, but whyfor on the Religion Forum?
Beyond the fact that this has happened in your favorite state, to a universtity comprised mainly of your good friends the Mormons, how does this relate to the primary topics of the Religion Forum?
Is this not a better topic for the Athletes and Their Universities Behaving Badly forum?
I ask because you have been pretty up front about your goals as they relate to your threads, but this one is nothing like the others.
(Gee...if Notre Dame injected Catholic doctrine into its campus honor codes, would you really be asking why an article discussing its honor codes was in the religion section?)
Why is the title different? Wouldn’t the actual title of the article actually have been better for your purposes?
“The Truth About Race, Religion, And The Honor Code At BYU”
Leave aside the impossibility of requiring over 30,000 hormonal young adults to abstain from sex or alcohol in college.
I managed to make it through 4 years of secular college, and all the way to my wedding night, without having sex.
I did drink twice, just because I wanted to see what it was like -- it wasn't illegal at that time, and my religion had no objection.
And our government expects most college students to abstain from drinking alcohol -- because it is now illegal until you are 21, and most students are under 21.
But there is a general antipathy toward religion and religious beliefs in modern society, and a major part of that antipathy is this myth that people CANNOT CONTROL THEMSELVES.
It's why we have to give 11-year-olds condoms, because we "can't expect them" to behave, or abstain from sex. I always wondered if that meant it was ok for the dorky 16-year-old who nobody will go out with to rape a classmate -- after all, we "can't expect him to abstain"?
And here we have writers suggesting that we can't expect young adults to obey the rules they sign up for in exchange for a college education.
BTW, "abstaining from sex and alcohol" is child's play compared to the rules athletes are required to follow to adhere to NCAA rules and regulations.
That's not the only quote from the authors that show their disdain for religion: blockquote> Since its earliest days, the LDS church, like most white Christian churches, maintained that blacks were not fully human. Not sure what churches these writers attended that taught that.
Anyway, a weird story, which in addition to bashing morality and christianity, suggests that BYU goes out of it's way into tricking good athletes into coming to their school, just so they can send secret snitches and snoops around to catch them in violations and throw them out. No real explanation is given as to how BYU benefits from recruiting star athletes and then kicking them out of school. It certainly didn't help them in the NCAA tournament.
I didn't change any headline.
Both that article you mentioned -- and the sidebar gallery, which is what's here...is linked off of the URL...
So, if you want "The Truth About Race, Religion, and the Honor Code at BYU" FR thread, go here: The Truth About Race, Religion, and the Honor Code at BYU
If you simply click on the link for this thread...look down @ the bullet point "More" under the "The Truth..." heading...keep looking to the right of that...and you'll find the linked headline for "Two Decades of Honor Code Violations."
The difference is that this latter is just one paragraph coupled with a picture gallery...the other is the lengthy story. (Glad I could clear that up for ya)
See post #9 at The Truth About Race, Religion, And The Honor Code At BYU
Two decades of honor code violations
And if there was another discussion about the main story from your main link, it would have been helpful to put that link in your first post. That way, people who don't follow everything you post won't comment on the stuff they find at the link you provide, and waste your time.
My favorite was the Jewish guy who got caught “drinking a vanilla cappuccino”.
