It was a difficult day for Martin Sheen as his son, Charlie, made international headlines for all the wrong reasons. Martin Sheen talks to Gay Byrne with remarkable openness about his family, his faith and his film career and what it means for him. He also reveals how they come together in his latest movie, 'The Way'.

Even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

to which Sheen shrugs as if to say, “why would there be?” saying simply, “no.”

Wow, did the interviewer misread that gesture wrong. A faithful Christian would mean “We’re talking about the kids right? What does the sinful parents behavior have to do with them?”

In his early days, Martin Sheen did Sunday morning Catholic dramas for television -- The Catholic Hour and Insight. He took his stage name from Fulton J. Sheen.

So what happened to him? How did he become ultraüberliberal? Maybe it was his love for the Kennedys. Maybe it was Hollywood and fame. IMDB mentions that his mother had "IRA connections," but you can find almost anything on the Internet.

IMDB also gives this quote from him: "I consider myself a liberal Democrat, but I'm against abortion." And this fact: "In 2004, he was listed as an endorser of March for Women's Lives. After learning about this, Feminists for Life, an organization that named him as a "Remarkable Pro-Life Man" in 2001, brought this to his attention, informing him that March for Women's Lives was a pro-choice group. At his request, March for Women's Lives removed his name from their list."

I saw that Gay Byrne/Sheen interview and I came away impressed that Martin Sheen is a very spiritual person and very bright, who was tightly raised Catholic and raised to be devout while growing up. He loves those memories and finds solace and comfort even today, even in Hollywood, with the daily Rosary. Parts of the Faith have made a deep impression on him and stuck with him, thankfully, but also it seemed to me, there is some Hollywood spirituality mixed in there, probably unavoidably, that makes some of his explanations and opinions a little loose when placed side by side with the Catechism, but a quite determined Catholic, that's for sure. He is a very intelligent man and a thinker, on a journey, and he is not perfectly catechized, but he is struggling through and God bless him for it.

I knew he was pro-life when he acknowledged such on the Johnny Carson show many years ago. But lately I was wondering just how important life was to him when I saw him doing marches for liberal causes, but never participated in any life marches. He may be pro-life, but he certainly doesn’t seem to be an advocate for the cause as he is for other causes.

Great that he´s pro-life. Too bad he can´t get with the program.
