Doug Kmiec Gets Religion

May 18th, 2011 by Dr. Paul Kengor

In 2008, Professor Doug Kmiec was the poster-child for Catholics supporting Barack Obama’s presidential bid. Call it a triumph of “social justice” over pro-life conviction.

Kmiec was a public voice among professing Roman Catholics who voted Obama president. It was fitting that among Obama’s very first moves, done literally as pro-lifers were leaving the annual March for Life, was an executive order ensuring that taxpayer dollars went to Planned Parenthood International.

More recently, President Obama drew a line in the sand in the budget battle, refusing attempts by Republican Speaker of the House John Boehner, a Catholic, to defund Planned Parenthood. Obama ensured taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood domestically as well.

Most ironic about this latest Obama action it that it seems to have happened at almost precisely the time that news broke that Doug Kmiec is resigning his post as ambassador to Malta, a plum reward for his service to Obama’s presidential campaign. What had Kmiec done wrong? In short, too much religion. To quote the Associated Press:

“The U.S. ambassador to Malta, an important Roman Catholic supporter of President Obama, said Sunday he would resign after a State Department report criticized him for spending too much time writing and speaking about his religious beliefs.”

In letters to Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Douglas Kmiec said he would step down Aug. 15. He told The Associated Press that no one pressured him to leave…  but a report this month by the State Department’s inspector general rebuked Kmiec for concentrating too much on issues such as abortion and his faith.

For his part, Kmiec rightly protested in a letter to Obama: “I doubt very much whether one could ever spend too much time on this subject.”

Well, apparently you can—that is, if you’re a faithful member of the Obama administration. Professor Kmiec seems to have finally learned that lesson, up close and personal. Now that’s what I call “getting religion.”

Is Kmiec, the CINO, finally getting religion?

I know this was hinted at about a month ago, but this lists a retiring date.

Kmiec’s religious condition is hardly made clear by this article, and the man has yet to utter not a word of public contrition for publically scandalizing the faithful. In fact, it was reported he was disappointed to be removed from the position that his scandalous support of Obama’s abortion agenda bought him.

I will be relieved when he at least expresses regret.

I remember being surprised that Paul Begala was pro-life. I thought Clinton’s cabinet was 100% pro-abortion.

He’s stepping down on August 15? Doesn’t seem like he’s THAT fed up to stick around three additional months like that.

On the other hand, that’s a great solemnity. And one is ambassador not for the president bot for the country.

A “pro-life Democrat” makes about much sense as a “pro-Jewish Nazi”.

Someone with real pro-life conviction cannot work to advance policies that enshrine abortion as a human right and that vindictively prosecute (and persecute) pro-lifers.

Begala is decidedly anti-life by virtue of his actions that knowingly and willingly advanced the culture of death.

Malta, where St. Paul was shipwrecked and survived the snake bite is a thoroughly Catholic country. I had the good fortune of knowing a priest from this country who was one of the best priests I have ever seen.

Kmiec’s appointment there was most likely Obama’s snide response to Catholic’s opposition and disdain of Kmiec.

Maybe being there has opened his eyes.

Time will tell, God works in mysterious ways, so I’ve heard.

There was a time when Al Gore and Jesse Jackson were pro-life. It used to be relatively normal to be pro-life and a Democrat. Now, it is a shrunken group of people because the party leaders are hostile.

August 15, the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. May she keep guiding Fr. Kmiec’s tentative steps in the right direction.

Yes, you’re right, I have been having so many discussions with my friends here over the past few days about the Jesuit priest who will be the Chaplain (whom some of us know and work with) for the House of Rep, that I automatically said “Father.” Both men, obviously for entirely different reasons, have been topics of controversy and confusion in past weeks, both in regards to Catholic issues. So hopefully you can understand my flustered state and forgive my slip of the tongue.

I remember being surprised that Paul Begala was pro-life.

Since when? How could someone claim to be Pro-Life and then support the big gun abortion backers, Clinton and Obama? Paul ought to be pro-life: I know he was catechized.
