Allied diplomats pressed Pope Pius to be silent on Nazi deportations

MANCHESTER, England (CNS) --

U.S. and British diplomats discussed exerting pressure on Pope Pius XII to be silent about the Nazi deportations of Hungarian Jews, according to newly discovered documentation. The British feared that the wartime pope might make a "radio appeal on behalf of the Jews in Hungary" and that in the course of his broadcast would "also criticize what the Russians are doing in occupied territory."

Sir Francis D'Arcy Osborne, the British ambassador to the Vatican, told an American diplomat that "something should be done to prevail upon the pope not to do this as it will have very serious political repercussions." Osborne's comments were made to Franklin C. Gowen, an assistant to Myron Taylor, the U.S. special representative to the Vatican.

Gowen recorded the conversation in a letter to Taylor, saying he had promised Osborne that he would bring his concerns to the "immediate attention" of the U.S. ambassador. "It was understood that, pending your reaction, he would not take any steps vis-a-vis the Holy See," Gowen told Taylor.

There is no way that Hitler would have gotten away with assissinating the Pope, his own troops and SS would have turned on him. Many of his soldiers and SS were (no matter how Satanic their actions) were devout Catholics and revered the Pope and would never have countenanced murder of the Holy Father. It would also have galvinized the rest of the world against him as well all the more. Mussolini would have turned on Hitler in a heartbeat.

HITLER DIDN’T HAVE A POPE – BUT HE DID
HAVE A MUFTI

Long before the child-abuse scandal, liberals were abusing the Catholic Church by portraying Pope Pius XII as a Nazi stooge. Based on a steady drumbeat of propaganda, starting with the 1963 play “The Deputy,” some suspected that the wartime pope was wearing an SS uniform under his pontifical robes.

In the past, the most vigorous defenders of the pontiff, who died in 1958, were orthodox Catholic writers. Now comes David Dalin – scholar, professor of history and political science and a Conservative rabbi – with a most welcome work: “The Myth of Hitler’s Pope: How Pope Pius XII Rescued Jews From The Nazis.”

Starting in the autumn of 1943, Pius ordered Italian churches and convents to hide Jews.

• In Rome alone, 155 monasteries and convents sheltered more than 5,000.

• Roughly 3,000 Jews found refuge in Castel Gandolfo, the pontiff’s summer residence.

• Hundreds of Jews were housed within the walls of the Vatican.

• Monsignor John Patrick Carroll-Abbing, a rescuer, founder of Italy’s Boy’s Town and a close confident of Pius XII, testified in his memoirs that all of this was done at the direction of a pope who’s now derided as a closet anti-Semite. Dalin writes: “He (Carroll-Abbing) stressed that the idea that he and others like him acted in spite of the pope’s silence ‘is a blatant lie! I spoke to Pope Pius XII many times during the war, in person, face to face, and he
told me not once but many times to assist the Jews. … I can
personally testify that the pope gave me direct face-to-face verbal orders to rescue Jews.’”

• The eminent historian Martin Gilbert (author of “The Holocaust: A History of The Jews of Europe During The Second World War”)) agrees. In a 1998 interview, Gilbert observed, “Hundreds of thousands of Jews (were saved) by the Catholic Church, under the leadership and with the support of Pope Pius XII.”

As Rabbi Dalin points out, at a time when Allied leaders cared little about the death camps (with the honorable exception of Churchill), the Catholic Church rescued more Jews than any other institution in Europe.

As Dalin notes, it takes a particular callousness to distort the history of the Holocaust to score political points. In effect, the Catholic left is using the deaths of six million Jews to advance a theological agenda.

How else explain this relentless assault on Pius XII, when little has been written about the role of Hajj Amin al-Husseini, then the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, in aiding and abetting the Holocaust?

A precursor to al-Qaeda and Hamas, al-Husseini devoted his life and considerable polemical skills to fomenting the most rabid Jew hatred.

Dalin (who devotes a chapter in his book to Islamic anti-Semitism) reports that al-Husseini took up residence in Berlin early in the war, as an honored guest of Hitler. The mufti made propaganda broadcasts to the Arab world calling for the extermination of Jews (“Kill the Jews, wherever you find them. This pleases God, history andreligion,”alHusseini implored in one radio address) and recruited a Waffen SS
company among Bosnian Muslims.

After the war, Dieter Wisliceny (one of Eichmann’s lieutenants) testified that the mufti even visited Auschwitz, and urged guards in charge of the gas chambers to “work more diligently.”

Regrettably, this monster escaped prosecution as a war criminal (a case of Allied pandering to the Arabs). In the late 1940s, he met a young Yasser Arafat in Cairo, and the torch was passed to the next generation of Jihadist anti-Semites. (Arafat called the mufti, “our hero al-Husseini.”) Dalin sees a direct connection between al-Husseini’s
murderous ideology and today’s Islamic anti-Semitism and terrorism.

Why has the mufti received so little notice from the liberal historians and commentators who are so quick to condemn the wartime pope? Perhaps because, while it’s fashionable in elitist circles to bash the Catholic Church, criticism of Islam is considered in bad taste. Since Muslims are often
anti-Western, the left is willing to bend over backwards to keep from offending them.

One of the things that influenced the negative treatment of both Pope Pius XII and General Francisco Franco (who also sheltered Jews, admitted them to Spain and had Spanish embassies all over the world offering them refuge) was the fact that the two were also anti-Communist and anti-Stalin.

The US, particularly under Roosevelt, with his Communist-filled administration, was utterly charmed by “Uncle Joe” and completely ignored and even covered up the horrible misdeeds of the Communists (who also treated Jews badly). It was considered bad form and disloyal to even mention these things.

After the war, both Franco and Pope Pius XII were the focus of hatred from the Democrats and the US (left-leaning) media because of their anti-Communism, and scurrilous and completely false things were said about both of them.

It is not as if the US never acknowledged this after the war.

Actions like this - keeping a lid on the holocaust (and there were very, very many) as well as the continued persecution of the Jews after the war lead to Truman recognizing Israel in 1948.

Some members of the Wehrmacht were. SS, not so much, although there is an interesting memoir written by a Catholic seminarian (later a priest) who ended up in the SS. (His SS superiors all thought the SS would "cure" him of his Catholicism. Didn't work.)

As to what Mussolini would have done ... interesting question. And the Italian people themselves might have risen up in guerilla war against their German occupiers.

I have read elsewhere that the allies were very uneasy about the the possibility the Pope would make anti Communist statements because Stalin was fighting Germany.

William and his new wifey cohabited long before the marriage and still got a full nuptial mass for their ceremony and she wore white (with a low enough neckline).

It is not possible for Kate and William to have a full nuptial mass as they are not Catholic and the ABC should have required them to separate before he preformed their protestant wedding ceremony.

Rabbi David Dalin's book "The Myth of Hitler's Pope" was excellent! It was chock full of first hand accounts, and other solid evidence that shows the left lies continually about Pope Pius XII.

It's clear that the left is doing this because of the move to make Pius a Saint. They also want to denigrate anything having to do with the Catholic Church, because they see the Church as their main enemy for changing the world to suit themselves.

"HITLER DIDN’T HAVE A POPE – BUT HE DID HAVE A MUFTI"

...AND A REICHBISHOP!

Ludwig Müller was installed by Hitler to the cabinet level position as Reichbishop and head of the Protestant Reich Church, (Deutsche Evangelische Kirche). The Reichkirche, as it was known, was formed by the Nazi party in 1936 to merge the 28 regional churches into a unified state church that espoused a single doctrine compatible with National Socialism. Fully compliant, on December 22, 1941, the German Evangelical Church called for all Protestant churches to withhold baptism to non-Aryans and bar them from all spheres of Protestant church life.

I’m curious, why do you make the distinction between the US State Department and the US as a whole in this affair, whilst placing collective responsibility on the British in general for the same?

“As to what Mussolini would have done ... interesting question. And the Italian people themselves might have risen up in guerilla war against their German occupiers. “

Likely. Even if Mussolini didn’t give a toss about religion (as indicated by his actions I am sure he HAD to have been indifferent), he would still have had the Italians to consider and he owuld have ended up lynched a lot sooner if he had let the Germans go after the Pope. The Pope is one of few people considered sacred (by many religions interestingly) and if he had spoken out, things would have been destroyed.

The Vatican spoke out LOUDLY against killing the terminally ill and retarded, with teh result of the Nazis stopping it (overtly anyway) as official government policy and if the Vatican had spoke up about the Jews, put the Nazis through the wringer about it, it would have either resulted in the end of it, or would have simply made things more impossible and more Jews would have lived. IF Pius had openly excommunicated Hitler, the more religious Germans would have turned their backs on him, or been less supportive of their policies, either way it would have put an end to an efficient system of butchery one way or another.

Yes, I’ve been backtracking and looking at what we’ve been told to what the other side has said and try and seek the truth in the middle. It despise the media. I can’t wait to get a Conservative in office so we can start some McCarthy hearings and that goes for ALL past presidents and their close advisors. Throw there butts in jail and many of the banksters. Reagan was great but how about George Schultz?

They’ve been modernizing the classics by changing words here and there...if you’ve got older copies hold on to them for your kids.

That’s weird, I found an article by him yesterday as I was looking for a specific name, this popped up, and was manna from heaven. Excellent information, as you’ve said, all in one article, though admittedly I’ve haven’t given it the read it deserves yet. Will make time tomorrow...

What was shocking about it? Jesus had His reason. That was His mission if the NT is to be believed. There is a whole world of difference between that and what Pius did, and what he COULD have done. And there was nothing he COULD have done if he was dead. Apples and oranges. Besides which, all the ways the Church DID help to rescue both Jews and Christians, he WAS laying down his life, and he knew it. Let’s not play semantics or holier than thou here. HE was not Jesus. He was not there to take on the sins of the world.

Yes...just recently Mark Twain and the Bible. The Marxists understand to control the ideas you control the language and words.

Political Correctness (cultural Marxism) is all about “their one view only allowed”- all else is attacked by name-calling and demeaning “words” to delegitimize the opponents of their sacred text of Satan.

They attack constantly and immediately anyone who dares to leave their plantation by their minions....the homosexuals, feminists, union goons, acorn, ALL PEOPLE who are devoid of logic and reason-—just ideologues who hate Judeo/Christian ideas, the Natural Family and God—the ideas that developed Western Civilization into the greatest successful experiment on earth of the most perfect civil society.

They think their totalitarianism of “utopia” will be better—as long as they can dictate every aspect of your life and confiscate all private property, even the minds of your children.
