Catholic Word of the Day: INSCRIPTIONS, 07-02-11
CatholicReference.net ^ | 07-02-11 | Fr. John Hardon's Modern Catholic Dictionary

Featured Term (selected at random):

INSCRIPTIONS

Writings or crude incisions made on the walls and tombs of the catacombs expressing the beliefs of the early Christians. These inscriptions show the people's faith in eternal life and resurrection of the dead, in purgatory, and in the joys of heaven. The word "bury" was unknown. The dead were deposited in faith, left for a time to rise on the last day.

All items in this dictionary are from Fr. John Hardon's Modern Catholic Dictionary, © Eternal Life. Used with permission.

TOPICS: Apologetics; Catholic; History; Theology
KEYWORDS: catholic; catholiclist
Have any of you seen these writings in the catacombs or on tombs?
