The Vatican is close to an agreement with the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) that would regularize the status of the breakaway traditionalist group, according to a report in Le Figaro.
Jean-Marie Guenois, the veteran religion correspondent for the French daily, predicts that a September 14 meeting between the SSPX leader, Bishop Bernard Fellay, and key Vatican officials will lead quickly to a resolution of the split that began in 1998 when the late Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre ordained 4 traditionalist bishops without permission from Rome, resulting in the excommunication of the SSPX leaders. Pope Benedict XVI lifted the excommunications in 2009, but the bishops and priests of the SSPX remain under suspension. That suspension could be lifted, and the SSPX given formal approval by the Holy See, under the terms of the agreement the Figaro writer envisions.
The Vatican and SSPX recently concluded a series of talks on theological issues, designed to identity the points on which the SSPX questions the teachings of Vatican II. According to Le Figaro, the proposed agreement would state that the issues raised by the SSPX are not fundamental doctrines of the Church, and it is possible to question them without challenging the authority of Church teaching.
Liberal Catholics will be unhappy with a regularization of the SSPX, Guenois concedes. But liberals will find it difficult to object to the proposed agreement, since they regularly claim to be loyal Catholics while raising questions about certain aspects of Church teaching.
(As well as the biggest heretical and vile nut priests and bishops on the Vatican side of the breech... these things aren't just one way...)

Nuts go on being nuts. Some are Holy some are not. But what happens to the Barque of St. Peter? A much more healthy, internal debate between the various factions that will lead to a better tomorrow. I hope. (Hope being a virtue, I think I am on safe ground here.)

If this latest of so many, many reports (which have proven false to date) is true, the Church will regret the prudential error of welcoming these dishonest vipers back. AND make no mistake whatsoever that this is about the Tridentine Mass. The Tridentine Mass is well on a path to being restored as a viable option whether the Vatican II Enthusiasts Club like it or not. Given a fair chance, it wil be restored eventually as the norm IN SPITE OF and not because of the SSPX cult of anti-papal rebellion.
What restoration of SSPX will REALLY do is create a universe of morally relativist arguments to shore up the aging and dying anti-papal Vatican II crew bent on destroying the Church itself (not possible because of Christ's promises to His Church but why do we need to recharge Richard McBrien's, Joan Chittester's and Rembert Weakland's almost dead batteries?).
Hear the weasels now: Look what SSPX said against JP II! We McBriens are just as entitled to bash all things Catholic while posing as Catholic as are the SSPXers! Whine, moan, bitch, complain and compare, ever compare, one rebellion with the other for phony poses of justification. "Gee, Mommy, all the other kids get to rape girls and rob banks, why can't IIIIIIIII rape girls and rob banks???? It's just not FAIR!!!"
Be careful what you ask for when you are likely to have plenty of good reasons not to like the inevitable results.
