Revival: Don't Substitute Praying for Obeying
So Samuel said: "Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed than the fat of rams." --1 Samuel 15:22
Have you noticed how much praying for revival has been going on of late-and how little revival has resulted?
Considering the volume of prayer that is ascending these days, rivers of revival should be flowing in blessing throughout the land. That no such results are in evidence should not discourage us; rather it should stir us to find out why our prayers are not answered....
I believe our problem is that we have been trying to substitute praying for obeying; and it simply will not work....
Prayer is never an acceptable substitute for obedience. The sovereign Lord accepts no offering from His creatures that is not accompanied by obedience. To pray for revival while ignoring or actually flouting the plain precept laid down in the Scriptures is to waste a lot of words and get nothing for our trouble. Of God and Men, 55-57.
"Search me, O God, and know my heart; show me any wicked way that needs to be corrected in my own life before revival can come. I'm praying for revival; help me to also be obeying. Amen."
This Insight for Leaders devotional is also available in a print-friendly format here on the LMI web site.
When I pray for revival (and I do that a lot these days because of things happening in my country and my church), I pray for the strength to start it and for others to have the strength to join me. Just praying for revival is asking God to get someone else to start it.
Same here. Last Friday’s devotional was on revival as well and addressed that very issue, the starting it.
I too have seen lots of people long for and pray for revival, but don’t see it starting.
You are correct, instead of waiting for it to happen and joining it, we should be it ( so to speak) and go on whether anyone else joins us or not.
I will agree with you on that in prayer.
I’ve been carrying what I feel is a command from God to start a revival for about a year, even before I knew that “revival” means something different than “tent meeting”. I didn’t even know to call it “revival” until a few months ago. I just knew what I was called to do. Last week, I started something to let us begin to move in that direction by just telling the church that we have to do it. Judging from the response, I think others have been waiting for someone to step forward to lead us.
Can you give me a link to last Friday’s devotional?
What’s really strange is that just this past Wed. a friend sent me something about our area needing revival which was almost word for word what Tozer said, and it was from something she encountered last year, but happened to be reminded of and sent so out an email to some of us abut it.
(Boy was that worded poorly....)
FReepmail coming.......
