Would You Attend a Same-Sex Wedding? {ans by Joel Osteen}
Christian Post ^ | 18 Oct 2011 | R Albert Mohler

Posted on 10/18/2011 11:38:34 AM PDT by Cronos

Would you attend a same-sex wedding ceremony? That question was posed recently to Houston pastor Joel Osteen, and Osteen said that he would attend, if the wedding involved friends. This came just after Osteen indicated that he could not perform a same-sex marriage ceremony, since he believes that homosexuality is a sin.

I recently wrote about this exchange, suggesting that Osteen’s position is morally and theologically incoherent. As I said:

This is beyond mere incoherence. It is moral and theological nonsense. More than that, it is a massive statement of ministerial malpractice. . . . You cannot celebrate what you say you know to be sin. You cannot honestly say that same-sex marriage defies the law of God, and then join in the celebration of that ceremony.

In recent days, Uri Scaramanga of “Out of Ur” and Leadership magazine posed the question to readers, using my comments as a point of reference. The question: “Is Al Mohler right? Is attending a same-sex marriage ceremony the same as performing one? Is it ministerial malpractice? What would you do?”

The responses to that question are revealing. I did not, however, argue that attending a same-sex marriage ceremony is the same as performing one, I did say - and I repeat - that it is incoherent and inconsistent to refuse to perform a same-sex marriage ceremony, and then to attend one.

Has anyone else noticed how the homosexual community has co-opted the term “bullying” to always mean being unkind to homosexuals.

There were always bullies in school as long as I can remember. We were always told to stand up to bullies tho that was sometimes easier said than done, but it was never about homosexuality.

Today you hear that term in the media and you just know they are pushing that agenda.

No - have already warned my extended family not to expect me to compromise my values for family harmony.

All the more reason not to. Stand firm, wrong is wrong.

SO it is ok for a family member to be wrong, just not all those other homosexuals?

I would only attend the wedding of a non relative if the underboss 'volunteered' me without asking me (You will do this.). I was made a member of the wedding party, a groomsman. And I couldn't refuse without physical or financial harm. Even if I had to wear a stupid white tux and white patent leather boots.

Thank *** for the booze at the reception.

It is a different world when someone in your family whom you love very much comes up to you one day and says they are gay.

im not going to tell them they are worthless and cut off all ties. im a sinner myself

*All I can say is, you go to your church and I’ll go to mine.*

Really? You follow a church? or God and His word? There are plenty of ‘churches’ that will tell you it is OK to do almost anything you want, even those explicitly called sin by God.

If I were to attend a church the sanctioned (as you seem to imply) such a sinful practice, I would run and not pass Go to a church that preached the Bible, the whole Bible, not just the parts that made me feel good about myself.

A wonderful friend is a blessing, his open, willful sinful nature is not.

Would you be so supportive of a zoophile? Necrophile? Pedophile? All sinful, all would tell you”It is who I am.”

You need not apologize for a lack of friends for me, but I am sorry that you seem blinded to right and wrong on this one.

WHo said cut ties? It is not an identity, it is a Behavior. Same as stealing, same as adultery. A BEHAVIOR. One that is wrong, destructive, unhealthy. Love them up by telling them they are wrong and that you will not condone, support or celebrate that behavior.

that does not mean you have no duty to avoid condoning. It works both ways, decisions have consequences and THEIR decision has consequences and they must accept it. You don’t go and they have a duty to respect that.

Family would respect you enough not to black mail you via ties of blood.

I can respect that argument you make. However, you can attract more bees with honey than you can with vinegar. Letting someone know that you love them and care for them even though you disagree with homosexuality is important.

That’s two level-headed, sensible posts from you. Keeping trying to spread some common sense around, the commodity seems to be in very short supply in our day in these United States. Good posts!

homosexuals are using emotional blackmail to attempt an obligation where none exists.

There is no reason in the world to endorse by attendance.

If because of their mating habbits they are never invited to family events or reunions, then so be it. Their choice and they have to live with the consequences.

We would no less condone a muderer, molester, or other person of bad acts.
