Notice how Paul broached the subject at Athens? By proclaiming to them the UNKNOWN GOD to whom the Athenians had built an alter. He was not preaching a “new” god, but the “Unknown God”.

Cutting into one’s way of making money does have a tendency to bring ut the evil in a person. Look at what happened at Ephesus when the souviner sellers (The coppersmith) lost business because of Paul’s preaching.
