Becoming Generous Givers

St. Martin of Tours shows us how

Becoming Generous Givers

Here’s a paradox that is central to Christianity: We lose what we keep, and we gain what we give away! “Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses it will save it,” Jesus told his disciples (Luke 17:33).

A generous heart is the key to happiness—both in this life and in the next. Every time we are generous, we become even more grateful for the blessings that God has showered upon us. Each instance of kindhearted giving shows us how enriched we are in the things that really count: compassion, humility, and goodness. Generosity also shows us that all people are created equal in dignity and worth, regardless of their social, racial, or economic standing. And finally, when we reach out to help God’s little ones, we touch the very heart of God.

This is what happened to St. Martin of Tours, a young soldier who was looking into becoming a Christian. One day, he met a poorly dressed man begging for alms in the freezing cold. Martin stopped, cut his coat in two, and gave half to the stranger. That night, in a dream, he saw Jesus in heaven wearing a torn cloak. “Master,” an angel asked, “why are you wearing that battered cloak?” Jesus replied, “My servant Martin gave it to me.” Realizing that by giving his coat to a beggar, he was really caring for Christ, Martin was pierced to the heart and immediately decided he wanted to be baptized.

How can we grow in generosity? First, thank God for his generosity. Second, pray for those in need. Third, look for opportunities to help someone who is struggling. Tutor a student, visit a shut-in, help in a soup kitchen, or collect goods for the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Ask God to fill your heart with generosity and compassion for others, and you’ll discover riches that money can’t buy.

At the present time I'm engaged in a bit of study about St. Gildas ~ I think I mentioned that the other day. Interesting that the St. Martin story also focuses on a cloak. Even though that's a bit hidden when you read about St. Gildas (or read his material), he wore a garment made of a single sheet of cloth ~ a GI ~ just like in the Far East and just like that GI in his name.

He slept on the ground.

Funny, I just put a couple small donations in the mail to a couple Catholic charities today. I have a hard time answering all the calls for help because they are so frequent! But today I just quickly dashed em off before I let myself think too hard. Maybe it’s because I went to Mass this morning, hmmm!

I was watching EWTN this evening and I caught part of the sermon on that Mass they televise every day and the homily was about this St. Martin of Tours. There were HUNDREDS and HUNDREDS of miracles AFTER his death.
Apparently he was really someone quite special.

I'm enjoying watching EWTN as it's a breath of fresh air for me. But then, what wouldn't be given the stuff on the air?

Quite true. I am already tired of the political maneuvering, and EWTN shows things which have lasting value.
