Cardinal Christoph Schönborn celebrated Mass at Vienna’s cathedral of St. Stephen on November 17, as part of a televised event that included testimony from a Medjugorje “seer,” who promised an apparition of the Virgin Mary immediately before the Mass.
Ivan Dragicevic, one of the “seers” who claim to have been receiving regular apparitions of the Virgin May for decades, spoke in the cathedral, in an event that was offered on live streaming video broadcast. The schedule called for an apparition at 6:40 pm, Vienna time. Dragicevic said that the Mother of God would bless all those present—and that this blessing would extend to those watching the internet broadcast.
The event in the Vienna cathedral caused consternation among Catholics who have questioned the validity of the alleged apparitions at Medjugorje. Bishops in Bosnia-Herzegovina, where Medjugorje is located, have strongly discouraged interest in the “Medjugorje phenomenon.” Still the alleged seers have continued to make public appearances in Catholic churches around the world, with the apparent approval of other bishops.
Cardinal Schönborn has a history of showing support for the Medjugorje “seers.” Early in 2010, he was forced to apologize to Bishop Ratko Peric of Mostar (the local diocese) for creating difficulties with his public expressions of support during a “private” visit to Medjugorje in December 2009. Later in the year, however, he welcomed the “seers” to Vienna and praised their efforts.
Last year the Vatican created a special commission to study the Medjugorje phenomenon, in response to pleas for a definitive statement from the Holy See on the alleged apparitions. The commission--chaired by Cardinal Camillo Ruini, the retired vicar of the Rome diocese—has held meetings and interviews but has not issued any public statement.

The children of Medjugorje were living in a communist regime, where they risked their lives to call people to repentance and dedication to Jesus. Their parish priest was terribly tortured over a period lasting a year and a half. Their message helped inspire the people of Eastern Europe to have the courage to overthrow their communist masters, with the help of a *real* Christian Presbyterian named Ronald Reagan. They still live simple lives in the same small village.
This is a foolish comment. Some apparitions have been validated (Lourdes and Fatima with miracles that have been validated. Just Google miracles at Lourdes and Fatima) while others have not. Medjugorje has not.

You are correct. Many (including me) don’t find the Medjugorje appartiions to be credible.
King Saul had a “seer” work for him too so there's every reason to be extremely, extremely careful about “visions and apparitions” and those who claim to produce them.
Considering the messages contrary to Catholic teaching that have issued from the “apparition” I have grave doubts as to its orgin and I don’t think it will ever be approved by the Church. Especially since the local bishop as stated over and over again that it does not pass the smell test. Oh he used a more official term than that but we know what was meant.
Considering the state the Catholic church in Austria is in the good Cardinal would do well to turn his attention to putting his own house in order instead of encouraging adherence to dubious visions.

Bears repeating. Not merely dubious visions, though, visions repeatedly condemned by the ordinary of the place where they are alleged to have occurred.
It's actually worse than that. Compare the Medjugorje "visionaries" with the authentic visionaries of Lourdes and Fatima.
St. Bernadette, the visionary of Lourdes, entered a convent, died there, and her body is incorrupt.
Of the three Fatima visionaries, one, Sr. Lucia, entered a convent and died there, just recently. The other two died very young, shortly after the visions ended, during the influenza epidemic of 1918.
The Medjugorje "visionaries" have gotten married, traveled the world on someone else's dime, at least one of them has a spiffy house in Italy, etc. Not one of them has entered the priesthood or religious life. (Ivan evidently tried the seminary but flunked out.)
It doesn't make sense that someone would have an authentic vision, and continue to live a very ordinary, somewhat well-to-do, very secular life. Something is wrong here.
What sort of bishop would invite these wolves in to feed on his flock? Particularly when warned against it?
Simple and sincere people come seeking spiritual solace and feeding and they get skinned..I can’t express enough contempt for the shepherds that facilitate such things...
