.- Monsignor Charles Brown, a 52 year-old New York priest who currently works in the Vaticans Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, is rumored to become the Popes next apostolic nuncio to Ireland.
If that rumor is true Id say hallelujah, Archbishop Timothy M. Dolan of New York told CNA Nov. 24.
What a good guy he is, the archbishop added. Hes a young, vibrant, very theologically savvy but pastorally sensitive guy.
Archbishop Dolan added that Msgr. Brown has loved in New York and has a wonderful pastoral side to him due to his work in university apostolates.
So if that rumor is true, then praised be Jesus Christ!
The news of Msgr. Browns possible appointment emerged earlier this week following a meeting of the Irish cabinet in Dublin where the Holy Sees nomination for a nuncio was discussed and approved. If appointed, Msgr. Brown would replace Archbishop Giuseppe Leanza who was reassigned to the Czech Republic in September.
It is widely recognized that relations between the Holy See and Ireland are currently at their lowest point since the two states established diplomatic relations in 1929.
Earlier this month, Irish Foreign Minister Eamon Gilmore announced the closure of Irelands embassy to the Holy See after 82 years. His claim that the decision was taken solely on economic grounds was met with skepticism by many leading Irish Catholics.
The decision to close the embassy followed harsh words spoken against the Catholic Church in July by Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny in the Dublin parliament. Prime Minister Kenny accused the Vatican of attempting to frustrate an inquiry into clerical abuse in the Diocese of Cloyne, County Cork.
The Vatican rejected this accusation and a spokesperson for the Prime Minister later confirmed that he had not been referring to any specific incident. Prime Minister Kenny has yet to withdraw his remarks or issue an apology.
Irish-Vatican relations could face hope, however, with the possible appointment of a new nuncio.
A native of New York, Msgr. Brown studied history at the University of Notre Dame before going on to study theology at Oxford and medieval studies at the University of Toronto. He also has a doctorate in sacramental theology from the Pontifical University of Saint Anselm in Rome.
Since 1994 he has been an official at the Congregation for the Doctrine for the Faith where he worked closely with Cardinal Ratzingernow Pope Benedictup until 2005. The congregation is also the Vatican body that deals most closely with issue of clerical abuse.
Those who have worked with Msgr. Brown say he is much loved in the Roman curia and have described him as a good and holy man. Over many years, Msgr. Brown has given up much of his spare timeincluding holidaysto work with Mother Teresas Missionaries of Charity in some of the poorest parts of the world.
Given his position as a Vatican official, Msgr. Brown has given few media interviews during his many years in Rome. However, in 2008 he spoke with a female Canadian journalist who described him as handsome, smart, young and funny, with a New Yorkers easy way of keeping his cool.
The Vatican press office has not yet confirmed his appointment but it could be officially announced by the Secretariat of State as early as Nov. 26.
Ping!
My wife is Catholic and I’m Lutheran. Remind me where a monsignor sits in the chain of command.
“Monsignor Charles Brown” = Fr. Charlie Brown?
Can’t resist it, and I daresay neither can his friends.
It’s the same ordinate as the priesthood, just a rank of distinction conferred by the bishop. So he’s an “honored priest”.
Here in the west, the title is used for priests who have received certain specific honorary awards or who hold certain offices.
When in doubt, salute. If it doesn't move, paint it.
But I did study enough latin to know what a nuncio is/does. And that equates to an ambassador. Stupid people don't get that anymore, since the 1700s or so.

Father Brown should be elevated to Bishop ASAP given his experience and background ....
And then I looked at my shoes and remembered a certain piano humorist (Victor Borge) that noticed the resemblance between the names 'Giuseppe Verdi' and 'Joe Green'.
So I won't make that link between mean Joe Green and Verdi. Or with Msgr. Brown and Mr. Shultz's creation. ;)

LOL! I call them all either "Father" or "Sir." And non-military, non-clerical persons either "Sir" or "Son."
Monsignor is an honorary title. Usually, it was given to somebody who had been a pastor for a long time, or somebody who had a lot of duties at the Chancery office. Now it is given very rarely in the US, although they give it more in the NE than in other parts of the country.
Monsignors don’t have any more authority than anybody else, except that once they have that title, people know they’ve been around for awhile and they’re approved by the upper ranks (but they will probably never be bishops, even though that was what that form of address originally meant).
For military in uniform, I call them by rank and name (supposing I can read it). And a Col in the AF or USA is a CAPT in the USN. That took forever to figure out. Marines are easy (YOU THERE, IN THE GREEN!).... just kidding, only serious.
For civilians that are non-clerical, brother or kiddo suffice.
I'm a simple man with simple ways. It works better for me where it's hot and harsh. ;)
Besides, they don't often let me out in public. For some reason.

If you have pretzels and beer at home, why go out?
It's safer for the Republic if I don't. Technically.
And what brain is unleashed on the world with this new speculative speaker (nuncio)?
We will see.
With the extra flourishes and trumpets, I expect great things.
Or it will be a long walk in dark woods.
And, in theory, I have that training. ;)

dolan’s such salesman.
He will be. I seem to recall reading recently that for this office, he will not only be consecrated a Bishop, but also that the office carries the dignity of being an Archbishop.
