Robyn Blumner: Romney's 'Mormon question' should have more to do with LDS church's past racism
South Florida Sun-Sentinel ^ | Jan. 27, 2012 | Robyn Blumner

There is an element of the Mormon faith that hasn't gotten a lot of attention, but if Romney is the nominee, it will....the relatively recent racism of the Church...which practiced exclusion and contempt for African-Americans...and has yet to fully repudiate it.

It wasn't until 1978 that the LDS church allowed African-American males into the priesthood -- an essential post that nearly all...males attain. Mormon men don't get to be god of their own planet without it. Yet Romney, as a Mormon missionary...tried to convert others into a faith that practiced overt racism...He was 31 years old before blacks were allowed to be full Mormons, old enough to reject a faith that acted like a pernicious, discriminatory private club.

The church's racial exclusion stems from Brigham Young...He preached, "You see some classes of the human family that are black, uncouth, uncomely, disagreeable and low in their habits, wild, and seemingly deprived of nearly all the blessings of the intelligence that is generally bestowed upon mankind," according to the Mormon "Journal of Discourses..."

Young, who is revered in the church to this day, claimed that the black race was cursed, noting that "the flat nose and black skin" are the marks of Cain, a...belief that blacks are descendants of the...son of Adam who killed his brother.

Of course racism was more widespread and publicly acceptable back then...

...Romney dodges the question when asked if the LDS church had it wrong before 1978.

He must not think it did...Romney's 2007 speech... categorically said that he would not "disavow" any Mormon precepts, proclaiming that the "faith of my fathers" is his own.

...Romney...chose his religion over standing for racial equality and justice. He refuses to apologize for it or suggest his church was once wrong...this supplication ...makes the Mormon question a legitimate one.

This is the finest MSM article I've seen on this topic. Researched well. Nuanced well. Carefully chosen distinctive words.

This journalist did well on this assignment.

From the Jan. 27, 2012 excerpted article: It wasn't until 1978 that the LDS church allowed African-American males into the priesthood -- an essential post that nearly all...males attain. Mormon men don't get to be god of their own planet without it. Yet Romney, as a Mormon missionary...tried to convert others into a faith that practiced overt racism...He was 31 years old before blacks were allowed to be full Mormons, old enough to reject a faith that acted like a pernicious, discriminatory private club...Romney...chose his religion over standing for racial equality and justice. He refuses to apologize for it or suggest his church was once wrong....this supplication...makes the Mormon question a legitimate one.

Why...it almost makes me wonder if MSM journalists are reading FR threads on Romney, after all...

Colofornian, Jan. 16, 2012 on a FREEP thread: Up through early June of 1978, blacks could not...hold priesthood privileges in the Mormon church...something they gave to even 12 yo white boys... Spencer W. Kimball, the Lds "prophet" who made the ultimate call to change its policy in June, 1978, realized they had a major problem in placing a temple in a mission field like Brazil. So the Mormon "prophet" changed almost 150 years' worth of Mormon racist policy on all this...(Ya gotta remember the Mormon church has been OFFICIALLY & OVERTLY racist for over 80% of its history!) At the time this occurred, Mitt Romney was 31 years of age...and yet we don't ever hear if Mitt had any "on the record" objections to these racist policies from Mitt's adult years...from 1965-1978. Why not?...By Nov 1, 2012, if Mitt is nominated, EVERY GOP voter will be linked, associated, tied to, etc. Romney's overt racism...being openly ridiculed as THE party that picked the "good ole boy" country club "whites only" member as THEIR pick to represent them.

Yes, I'm sure you can find some 19th century Baptist leaders somewhere uttering something similar to this day...but Evangelicals...

(a) Didn't ever consider them to be "prophets" whose words were as good as "scripture" -- as is the case re: the relationship 'tween Lds & Brigham Young;

(b) Nor, too, we didn't "honor" such racism by naming our prestigious universities after such a racist...or spend up to hundreds of $millions collectively in THIS generation ensuring our sons & daughters go to such campuses (BYU-Provo; BYU-Idaho; BYU-Hawaii) so "honored" after a devout racist.

THIS is why the Kenyan wants to run against Milt. The commie messiah would be in race card player’s heaven.

Also, Mittens is backed by the GOP Proud crowd because he has his own unmentioned reasons for wanting to demolish the meaning of traditional marriage.

Exactly. As I wrote in my piece this afternoon titled

“Romney Pledges to be “True to his Faith” as President - Just what might that entail?”
http://www.tableofwisdom.com

“Newly produced documentaries will be airing all over the liberal controlled media, highlighting the controversies – but they will not come directly from the campaign. Romney understands that tactic but this time it won’t just be PACs; it will be The History Channel, Discovery Channel, 60 minutes…”

Yup. Milt becomes then "Milt-the-Wilt"

And Milt is not just the "White House fave," but is the "white and delightsome" MSM fave as well.

Then they get to make the rest of 2012 a full referendum vs. racism. All economic issues will get swept aside to talk about race. All social issues will be swept aside to talk about race.

And this is what the Establishment Republicans pied pipers want?

Note...that in a PC multi-cultural, all-religions-are-semi-equal environment, that the MSM doesn't have too many legs to stand on re: "The Mormon 'Question'." Yet this journalist nails it: Racism is a "fair game" matter to bring up even among the multi-culturists. In fact, it's not just an "even" question -- but one that is especially relevant.

Romney will never be able to answer questions about mormonISM truthfully. He must protect the “secrecy”.

... Romney dodges the question when asked if the LDS church had it wrong before 1978.

White and delightsome Bishop Mittens also has no choice but dodge the question of whether the LDS Church has it wrong after 1978. Sacred Mormon scripture and holy prophetic pronouncements are still loaded with dozens of examples of hideous racism. The entire bunch is extremely vulnerable on the issue ... and rightfully so!

You think the rats won’t take that and run with it?
They’ll pull the race card and tear him apart!

‘Every male god of his own planet???’

I’m not so sure I’d trust the judgement of a POTUS who believed such far out things.

Yes

Romney would cause us to lose most of our possible down ticket wins...

He would stink up the chances of the GOP senate and house candidates...

Yup. Not only are there STILL...
...skin-based racist Book of Mormon verses highlighting the phrase "WHITE and delightsome"...
...but the WHITE House...
...is but a stepping stone to Mitt's awaiting Great WHITE throne...
...to run & rule his own planet as a divine peer of God!

Imagine that. GOP voters actually -- and others seriously considering voting for somebody who could say to God, "move over, I'm here, your Peer."

We need a cartoon with Mitt putting out his "Divine Placard" that says, "Worship. Praise. Adoration. Glory. Prayer. All now accepted here."

It could be the campaign of the ages; the “messiah” vs “the god in embryo”. Sort of a modern day clash of the titans.

Wait till the MSM gets to the doctrine of the man calling his wife from the grave at the resurrection, that is if he is pleased with her and wants to. That should get him the female vote.

Yes. And, of course, the "birther" question will be re-raised as well. And, no, not just with Obama.

You see, Mitt claims he was actually "spirit-born" on another planet.

Then, as this alien spirit, he was sent to this planet to inhabit a body.

ALL: Do you really have to imagine the MSM "loving" the Scientology-like sci-fi script they're already writing???

And are spirits born on other planets actually eligible to become POTUSes of the United States on Planet Earth? [That will be the new controversy stirred up by a few]

Obama won't have to say a thing.

'Tween the MSM, other sources, and some SuperPAC ads, duck! ('Cause EVERY GOP registered voter will be associated with Mitt-the-alien if he gets the nomination)

Book of Mormon Jeopardy on Women

Time to hit the Jeopardy category of “Women in the Book of Mormon.” (For those who don't know "Jeopardy," the answer comes first)
Answer: 2%
Question: What % of the 250 or so characters in the Book of Mormon are female?

Answer: Once
Question: How many times are “sisters” even referenced in the Book of Mormon? [The only reference I've found is 2 Nephi 5:6 – and even then these sisters of Nephi are unnumbered & unnamed]

Answer: Sarai
Question: Who's the only wife mentioned by name in the Book of Mormon?

Answer: Abish
Question: Who's the only daughter mentioned by name in the Book of Mormon?

Answer: Don't Exist
Question: Who are sisters mentioned by name in the Book of Mormon?

Now that we know the BoM marginalizes women, how can we tell if it trivializes women, too?

(1) Leading off the lineup of Mormon women, we have the unnamed daughter of Jared (Ether 8:8-12). What goes through her brain? Why she wants to dance before a man so that she'll seduce him into marrying him; then this household can properly commit patricide. Nice.

(2) There's an unnamed Lamanite queen in Alma 47:35. She's easy to defraud.

(3) There's another unnamed Lamanite queen in Alma 22:19-24. Let's see. This queen sees Aaron & servants @ foot of a dead king's bed. She jumps to wrongful conclusions. Then in all her decisiveness, she's going to massacre them for guilt-by-association. Then she started to back down from her heavy-handed executive authority. Why? Not because of justice, but because of fear – her servants were fearful. So she was, too (v. 21). Aaron, seeing that this woman was no match for kingdom authority, elected, instead to do the “easy thing.” And what was the easy thing in comparison to trying to deal with this queen? Why, he raised the king back from the dead (vv. 22-23).

(4) And since the book of Alma in the Book of Mormon seems to carry the predominant mention of women on behalf of the entire book, how do the earlier chapters introduce such women?
Here, read it yourself:
“And now, may the peace of God rest upon you, and upon your houses and lands, and upon your flocks and herds, and [“and” = covering things you haven't yet covered...so what you seen the next line applies to what follows -- not what was preceding]
and all that you POSSESS, your women and your children,
according to your faith and good works,
from this time forth AND FOREVER
And thus I have spoken. Amen. (Alma 7:27)

(Well, last time I looked, forever meant forever...meaning women are forever...possess[ions] per the Book of Mormon.

Other than that, when women are mentioned in the Book of Mormon, they are good for toiling, spinning, working (Mosiah 10:5; Hel. 6:13) and having kids (1 Nephi 17:1), which the prestigious clans of the Book of Mormon were good at having by gobs of millions...supposedly.

And even when we get to the grandest of stories about women yanked out of the Bible, even Joseph can't get it quite exact. He references an unnamed virgin in 1 Nephi 11:18 -- who Smith identified as "the mother of God." Now the Roman Catholics among us might say, "So?"

But doesn't a POTUS candidate who embraces a "female-is-best-out-of-sight" "sacred" book -- the Book of Mormon -- just inspire the 98% of non-Mormon women in America out there to go vote for him?

Why...he might even appoint a few females as administrative assistants for his Cabinet members! (We already know he won't appoint Muslims...why how religious-expression progressive that is!)
