Irish-American Pols Group Skips Salute to Cardinal Dolan in Disagreement With Church Views

Nod goes from 'no-brainer' to nonstarter after some lawmakers object to Catholic positions on gay marriage and priest sex abuse, Albany group members say

It's not just the folks at the Empire State Building who are snubbing Cardinal Dolan — a group of Irish-American state legislators in Albany have dissed him, too.

A push to make Dolan the guest of honor at the March 12 annual dinner for the New York State American-Irish Legislators Society was squashed amid internal controversy, multiple sources said.

“Dolan was the first one mentioned to honor, given his recent ascension to cardinal, and originally it looked like it was leaning that way,” said one supporter of the idea. “It was a no-brainer.”

But some Assembly Democratic members are said to have balked because of the church’s vehement opposition both to same-sex marriage and a bill to extend the statute of limitations for past victims of sex abuse by priests.

“It was clear there were certain members of the majority who would be unhappy and uncomfortable if the honoree was the cardinal,” a second member of the society said.

It was decided, instead, to honor Brian O’Dwyer, the liberal lawyer .

Several members of the bipartisan group groused that an honoree’s political views shouldn’t be a major consideration.

“We’re an Irish organization,” said one source. “Our guest of honor should be a prominent person in the Irish community.”

Dolan, he said, “is a newly elevated cardinal and he is a fine Irishman and a prominent player on the stage. You can make the argument I disagree with Mr. O’Dwyer’s politics, but I think he’s a fine Irishman and a great honoree — only he should have been next year.”

Assemblyman Michael Cusick (D-Staten Island), the society president, denied Dolan was snubbed

exactly what is wrong with the north east?

That area should have been the most conservative area in the country with all the supposed Catholics but instead we have a millions of people saying they’re Catholic but they’re loony liberals for homosexuals, cross dressing, mutilating ones self, and men whom think they’re women who then think they’re homosexual woman.

The place is nuts and maybe it’s better for the north east to join Quebec and have their liberal perverted utopia

and another thing.

This is not about contraception like the left keeps harping on about and the GOP have shut up about , this is about the 1st amendment.

Every church, etc should unite and get muslims, Jews etc and say you’re religion is under attack as well, they will make you ignore your faith.

Idiots up there , truly big idiots who cannot see a bigger picture

I always wondered the same thing, Manc. How could the bedrock, the cornerstone, the very start of America have turned from its roots into the most corrupt cesspool of liberalism on the north American continent? My guess is that due to the age and the number of people who moved through that area during the start of our nation, corruption settled heavily into specific areas and bled out. I believe Tammany Hall started NYC’s decline; Atlantic City for Jersey; and I’m sure there’s corruption plaguing every corner of Boston, Dover, Albany, Providence, etc.

Who gives a damn what a group of liberals think about Cardinal Dolan. The Church is not changing it’s bibical views to make liberals happy. Been the same way for 2,000 years. Cardinal Dolan is the most prominent Catholic in the United States. I know that in the history of the Church there has never been an American Pope, but don’t count out Cardinal Dolan, he is that well-liked and respected at the Vatican.

“Cusick said Dolan was one of several names recommended, but was not chosen after his staff said the cardinal would be unable to attend.

A Dolan spokesman said Dolan is scheduled to leave Albany that evening for Washington to chair a meeting of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.”

Seems like a simple statement from the Cardinal would clear it all up.

Didn't know that there was such a thing as the New York State Irish-American Legislators Society.

My guess is that those opposed to the Cardinal's appearance at their group are 100% Democrats. But of course the NY Daily News article won't say that, because it makes their Party look petty and foolish.

It has been socially and politically advantageous to be a Christian in this country from the beginning.

I predict it will (if it hasn’t already) turn into a distinct liability. That will reveal to everyone who the real Christians are.

“Irish-American democrats snub Cardinal Dolan over Catholic doctrine”

there. fixed that headline. How proud NY catholics must be of these democrats. Why sure and begorra the Methodists and Episcopalians would love to have them, so why don’t they change churches?

Change churches because the Cardinal’s right? Don’t think so. Stop voting for the Irish pols, and boycott Ireland.

I’m not Irish, but I AM Catholic - the Cardinal shouldn’t be honored by liars claiming Catholicity when they are in fact anti-catholicity. He should be “out of town” that day if he hasn’t testosterone, and decline with a nudge of Catholic brotherly reaffirmation of Church teaching and eternal damnation on the line.

Morality SHOULD matter. They’re too immoral for him, and think he’s too immoral for them. Who in the hell honors someone you find morally repugnant - and who accepts an honor from a bunch of morrally repugnant folks?

He can sit down and have a private dinner to love and discuss things with them like Jesus anytime.

Timothy Cardinal Dolan was atop the list to be guest of honor at the New York State American-Irish Legislators Society dinner on March 12, but squabbling over Catholic Church politics killed the plan, members said.

Stop voting for the Irish pols...

Not all of 'em, only the lefties amongst them.

...boycott Ireland.

Sorry, I don't see the connection between these Irish American politicians whose families probably came here in the 19th century, and the current nation of Ireland.

One group of democrats do not speak for Ireland, American Irish, or even American Irish pols.

Dolan's Irish by blood too.

Quebec is overwhelmingly Catholic, something on the order of 75%.

Yeah, right. From the comments in the story, it's very CLEAR he was snubbed because he is a strong voice for the Catholic Church, with which those Irish Democrats disagree.
