An idol is not, and does not represent, God.
An idol is a physical entity, or physical representation of an entity, other than God which is worshiped (to wit prayed to, express spiritual adoration of, etc).
An idol is not, and does not represent, God.
To an idolater, an idol, the object of their worship, IS God. They are mistaken. As are we if we mistake not God for God. It is this mistake that makes it an icon, not the object itself.
If this object 'represents' God - to them - it is not an idol. It may represent a false God, but this is not the same as an idol. It can, however, be called an icon. There can also be icons, or representations, of the true God.
is worshiped (to wit prayed to, express spiritual adoration of, etc).
'Prayed to' as God, not prayed to as in 'ask' as in intercessory prayer.
Worship is for God alone. And here, Catholics have very specific worship: the Holy Eucharist.
Without a clear and specific idea of worship, it becomes much fuzzier. For example: what is spiritual adoration? Can you adore your spouse spiritually?
Or, does this resolve, again, to knowing the difference between God and not God?
As are we if we mistake not God for God. It is this mistake that makes it an icon idol, not the object itself.
Thanks!
I, for one, am stunned at the lack of truth in Editor-Surveyor’s comments.
Sigh...... There’s one in every crowd.
I’m sorry, but why is everyone still attempting to converse with this heretic? Time to shake the dust from our sandals and move on.
Discuss the issues all you want, but do not make it personal.
My apologies. Won’t happen again.
"My brethren, if any among you strays from the truth and one turns him back, let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins." - James 5:19-20
If you assume the mantle of the Pope of your own created religion, why then, anything goes.
they had to go 1000 miles...light travels 186,000 miles per second, hence....travel 1000 miles at 186,000mper second, it takes you 1/186,000 of a second to do so.
I want to comment on your tag line concerning a federal sales tax...there is, at this time, an expose’ of a high price call girl ring in New York....with this as a minor example, and these girls charging $1,000 to $2,000 per hour for their services, and MILLIONS of people working “under the table” and drug dealers, and people who embezzle from their employers, and robbers and thieves, and self employed persons who cook the books.....how are you proposing to tax them??? Only a sales tax works....they spend all their money.
Ah, but there can easily come a point where our resolution is more the product of pride than charity, and this is a different sort of temptation. Hence my reference to Mark 6:11 “And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you; going forth from thence, shake off the dust from your feet for a testimony to them.”
Sorry for the delay. (due to the above normal temps, I think I smashed more bugs in just this week, than in any full month of March in my life)
**Lets just start with one question at a time.**
Why is the phrase Son of God found many times in scripture, but the phrase God the Son is found nowhere in scripture?
Thanks for showing interest in discussing this, xzins.
You can’t possibly be serious.
You would allow the massive harm a sales tax would cause just to tax a small handful of sluts?
Did I miss a humor tag?
You don’t understand that almost all of the MSS and fragments are in Greek?
.
Most if not all of what was in Hebrew or Aram would likely have been destroyed when Rome sacked Jerusalem.
I thank God that Origen had nothing to do with canon.
But his deliberate gnostic corruptions of others’ MSS made their way into Aleph and Sinaiticus, which were later used by Hort and Westcot in their attempt to expunge the diety of Christ from their Greek NT.
For those that are God’s elect, and have the Holy Spirit, canon is of little impact. Canon is mostly for the lost “Bible scholars” that inhabit the halls of secular universities.
