Catholic Tony Blair Supports Legalizing Gay Marriage in UK

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who converted to Catholicism in 2007, is backing the government's plan to legalize same-sex marriage before 2015, which has drawn sharp criticism from leaders of both the Roman Catholic Church and the Church of England.

U.K.'s The Independent on Sunday reported it found that Blair, a British Labour Party politician, had told his friends that he "strongly supports the Prime Minister's proposal" to enact a new law to make gay marriage legal.

The government of Prime Minister David Cameron, led by his Conservative Party in coalition with the Liberal Democrats, announced their plan last September. And the news of Blair's support comes days before the government is likely to release a consultation document concerning the proposal.

Blair, who was prime minister from 1997 to 2007, is backing gay marriage despite strong reactions by his church. Pope Benedict XVI on Friday urged the Catholic community to resists the "powerful political and cultural currents seeking to alter the legal definition of marriage."

Cardinal Keith O'Brien, the leader of the Catholic Church in Scotland, has also called the plan "madness" and leading to a "grotesque subversion of a universally accepted human right." The Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams and the Archbishop of York John Sentamu have also expressed serious concerns.

There should be quotes around the word “Catholic” in the headline.

It's similar to the foolish conservatives who swooned over Joe LIEberman. Aside from the one issue LIEberman supported us on (the war on terror), he is otherwise a reliable leftist. Ditto with Tony Blair. Take away his strong support for Bush on Iraq and he's like Bill Clinton on all other issues. In fact, Blair got himself elected Prime Minister in 1997 by studying Clinton's '92 playbook with "New Democrats" and coming up with "New Labour" (same strategy... campaign as right-of-center and govern left-of-center)

While there are plenty of cradle Catholics who are liberals and defy the Catholic Church on key issues like abortion and marriage (probably most of the "Catholics" in France are even more liberal than Blair), most of them are secular and cultural Catholics. What makes it particularly odious is when some very public convert to Catholicism claims they found religion but then openly defies the Catholic Church on a major issue (and I think Blair is still pro-abortion as well). This is why I don't trust most of the people who "found Catholicism" because they slept with a Catholic woman and married her.

At the very least, Blair's bishop should deny him communion until he repents on this issue. Good luck getting any of the English Catholic bishops to grow a spine though. They're even weaker than their American counterparts.

Tony Blair never became a Catholic. He became a Catholyk, or a Catholic Lite. He was pro-abortion before, during, and after becoming a “Catholic.”

Needless to say, the priest who “received” Blair into the “Church” was dazzled by celebrity and derelict in his duty.

The bishop of the diocese where Blair became a Catholyk ought to make a declaration nullifying that “reception” into the “Church.”

Blair should turn in his rosary, scapula and missal and return to the Church of England, which doesn’t consider homosexual behavior or homosexual marriage a sin. After all, its founder, Henry VIII, was a murdering, adulterating, arrogant man who MADE HIS OWN CHURCH—which allowed him to marry and divorce at will: divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived.

I think the Catholic Bishops have only themselves to blame. They’ve been sucking at the “social justice” teat for the last 50 years or so. As such, catechesis has suffered. Too many Catholics today, especially those instructed “in the spirit of Vatican II” have no issues with gay marriage, contraception, abortion, etc.

He can’t be a “Catholic”. You can’t deny Natural Law Theory-—it is Common Sense and embedded into Catholic Theology because of St. Aquinas.

There is nothing ethical or natural about sodomy. It is always evil; it always is a silly, bizarre, evil disordered use of the body which not only demeans and degrades the body—it habituates treating human beings as objects-—a means to an end.....always, always evil.

You can never say such an evil, selfish behavior is “good”. Makes the Bible “hate speech” and wrong.

Just a thought, how is a “gay marriage” consummated? Both m/m and f/f?

This ought to turn a light on in the heads of at least a few Catholics...You can’t become a member of the Body of Christ by joining a religion or getting water sprinkled on you or performing some ‘sacraments’...
