What is "Celestial Polygamy"? [Mainstream Mormons say polygamy still occurring near Kolobian colony]
Mormonism Research Ministry ^ | Bill McKeever

Posted on 04/22/2012 12:50:55 AM PDT by Colofornian

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints seems to be engaged in an uphill battle in its effort to convince the public that they no longer practice polygamy. An LDS Newsroom release posted on September 7, 2007, stated:

“For the record, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints discontinued its practice in 1890, and for 117 years Mormons have followed a monogamous lifestyle. Yet careless headline writing or sloppy reporting still causes millions of Mormons to have to answer questions from their neighbors, coworkers, friends and neighbors: ‘Are you a polygamist?’ ‘Is that your church I read about in the newspaper?’ or ‘How many wives do you have?’ We ask journalists to clearly make the distinction between The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and polygamous groups. We also hope Church members and other readers will politely remind news organizations that continue to report inaccurately to make the effort to avoid these mistakes.”

The above press release makes reference to a document released in 1890 by fourth President Wilford Woodruff. Known as the Manifesto, this document makes the following promise:

“Inasmuch as laws have been enacted by Congress forbidding plural marriages, which laws have been pronounced constitutional by the court of last resort, I hereby declare my intention to submit to those laws, and to use my influence with the members of the Church over which I preside to have them do likewise.”

The above excerpt has often been referenced whenever the public erroneously connects modern polygamists groups with the LDS Church. It is true that the LDS Church no longer tolerates a member living in a marriage relationship with more than one woman, and in that sense it has nothing to do with modern polygamist groups. If this is what 15th President Gordon B. Hinckley meant when he stated, “I wish to state categorically that this church has nothing whatsoever to do with those practicing polygamy,” he was not lying. However, what is not entirely true is the assumption that the Mormon Church has completely renounced the practice of plural marriage. How is the public to understand this seeming contradiction?

The solution to this confusing dilemma is found in a concept dubbed “celestial polygamy.” Having more than one wife in the “here and now” is grounds for excommunication from the LDS Church; however, the possibility of having more than one wife in the “hereafter” is still very much a part of the Mormon culture. According to an article in the April 20, 2008 edition of the Salt Lake Tribune:

“Though the LDS Church had disavowed polygamy, it is still enshrined in Mormon scripture (Doctrine & Covenants 132) and some believe it will one day be re-established, if not on Earth, at least in heaven. In his quasi-official 1966 book Mormon Doctrine, which remains in print, the late LDS Apostle Bruce R. McConkie wrote that ‘the holy practice will commence again after the Second Coming and the ushering in of the millennium.’ And by policy, men can be ‘sealed’ for eternity in LDS temple rites to more than one wife, though women are permitted only a single sealing. Three of the church's current apostles, for example, were widowed and remarried. Each will have two wives in the eternities” (“Modern-day Mormons disavow polygamy”).

Note carefully the last sentence, “Three of the church’s current apostles, for example, were widowed and remarried. Each will have two wives in the eternities.”

The three Mormon Apostles referred to in this article are Dallin Oaks, L. Tom Perry, and Russell M. Nelson. All three men are widowers, and all three men have been “sealed” to a second wife.

What is the point of being “sealed” for eternity? Speaking in General Conference in 1994, Seventy Charles Didier stated:

“This [marriage] union is solemnized by the authority of the everlasting priesthood into a holy and sacred ordinance, the temple sealing. It is also called the new and everlasting covenant of marriage, and its purpose is to bind couples together on earth and bring them to a fulness of exaltation in the kingdom of God in the hereafter.” (“Remember Your Covenants,” Ensign (Conference Edition), May 1994, p.42).

In a January 28, 1999 City Weekly article titled “Only for Eternity,” author Andrea Moore Emmett quoted LDS Church spokesman Dale Bills who said, “We have to see sealing ordinances as a promise pending faithfulness and yes, some will live polygamy.”

Mormon women who find the teaching of celestial polygamy unsettling will probably not find comfort in a May 31, 2006 LDS Newsroom statement that reads:

“Question: Is polygamy gone forever from the Church?

We only know what the Lord has revealed through His prophets, that plural marriage has been stopped in the Church. Anything else is speculative and unwarranted.”

If it is really speculative and unwarranted, what is the point of Mormon widowers being sealed in Mormon temples? If temple sealings of this nature have significance in the hereafter, how can the LDS Church honestly say “plural marriage has been stopped”?

So, I won’t be with my loved ones? I just get to hang with Jesus?

Again...are you ignorant the entire idea of temple Mormons having spirit-kids & ruling their own planets?

Hardly a "Christian" concept...

The Christian concept of heaven enlarges your family & your brothers & sisters (in Christ)...No Christians have ever said your spouses are removed from your presence -- unless they are hell-bound...

The Mormon concept of a heavenly family is diminished to marriage & blood status...whereas with Christians, Jesus blood brings us together as one large family.

Are you going to continue to "Play dumb" that there's no difference there?

How silly can you get?

Oh, never mind...the universal translator app on my Android™ says that’s pseudoreligionese for “STFU”...

I thought I was supposed to WASTE MY TIME defending myself against vague charges; instead of pointing out MORMON teachings.

Who knew!

Now, THAT’s the Mormon Church you claim to be so knowledgeable about, I think your unquestioning approval would make you a perfect slave for them...they gave you what you wanted to hear, why don’t you give them your kids.

I will only comment on the accusation above.

First, where did i say i was knowledgeable about the Mormon Church?

I just said i had been around the Mormons all of my life.

Second, where did i say i approved of the Mormon Church?

What i really said was that i think the Church is a fraud.

If you can not get the facts even close on these two little comments how in the world am i to take any thing else you say seriously?

Now i will admit that i did make a few comments just to stir up the emotions of the religious zealots but it was just dry humor.

Since you will most likely be the only one reading this i will say this again.

I believe the Mormon Church is as fraudulent as a 3 dollar bill.

That is what religion is as far as i am concerned, some one from one religion bashing another religion is pathetic because it is most likely one fraud bashing another.

Jesus did not come here to set up a religion, he came here to tell us the truth.

Here is what it is about

matt22:

Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

38
This is the first and great commandment.

39
And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

40
On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Luke 6:31
And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.

John8:32
And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
Matt 10:39
He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.

Our salvation is not dependent on religion, in fact i really believe that religion is a detriment to ones salvation.

The whole point is that i am not arguing in favor of Mormonism i am just reminding people of this.

matt 7
5”Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

Seems to me if we are going to expose religion we should expose all religion instead of just one sect of it.

That’s it. Liar, bigot, give me what you want, I don’t give a damn.

No, i would not call you any of those things, i just think you were reading between the lines of what i said and interpreting them wrong, as it is hard to tell if some one is serious or if they are just using humor when writing, at least i do not know the correct way to do it.

Maybe since i do not know the proper way to do it, i should not do it.

If we were to vote on the biggest fraud where religion is concerned, the Mormons may come up on top, but you can bet there would be a bunch of other so called Christian religions right under them, people loves religion more than they love God and that is exactly the way it was in the days of our lord.

Jesus set them free from religion, but by the time of the days of the holy roman empire the people were again enslaved by religion, only with a different name, they were once more catering to the whims of the religious leaders and also making them rich and giving honor to the church leaders instead of to the Father and the Son.

It seems so obvious to me that the Mormon Church is a fraud that i see no need to point it out to any one, they love religion and not God so they got it.

However other Christian religions are much less noticeable as a fraud, people will join them thinking they are the real deal, not realizing that it is a money thing, the more members the more money.

Mat 23:15
Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you traverse sea and land to make a single proselyte, and when he becomes a proselyte, you make him twice as much a child of hell as yourselves.

I have a Step Nephew who was born into the Mormon Church, when he was about 25 years old he got the hell out of it and publicly denounced it, his step brother ( my nephew ) willingly joined it, he is still there because what he is interested in is religion.

Mormonism is so obviously a fraud why warn any one against something that they love to begin with which is religion.

Seems to me that we should be exposing frauds that are not so noticeable as frauds.

If some one shoots a man in the back any one can see that it is murder, plain and simple, that is the Mormon Church.

But if some one spends a lot of time picking a fight with some one who they know they can beat and supposedly kills them in a fair fight, then there is a doubt about if it was the same as murder or not, that of course would be some of these other Christian religions.

There is room for argument for or against, as far as i am concerned if they call them selves religious, i will stay away from them.

So you also have my permission to call me anything you like, and i do care but i will gladly take what ever comes to tell it the way i see it.

Ah...so you weren’t trying to subvert the discussion, you were trying to sabotage it...because you feel the subject has already been done, and all the information people need to know about Mormonism, they already know. In your universe the subject is closed, and you think tbis discussion should be closed as well.

How megalomaniacally Machiavellian of you.

Do you routinely meander through FR deciding which threads deserve to exist, and which should be silent? What exactly is the vital cause that you think everyone on this board should shut down their conversation and pay attention to? Is this simply the only way you get any play? Or, Heaven forfend, is there a candidate involved?

Your cutting-and-pasting of Scripture to elevate your intentions is very telling...given the depth from which you had to raise it.

"Mormonism is so obviously a fraud why warn any one against something..."

That may be true for those who were either raised in good Christian families and homes or who are very knowledgeable of the scriptures.

There are many like me, who were converted because of our prior or current ignorance of what Christianity really is.

I will also submit that posting the truthful information about mormonism on the web helps to inject some results in the web based searches that are now practically overrun with "official" church results.

An official campaign is underway to do just that. Post so much information and create as many web sites as is possible that are favorable to mormonism, that those who are searching for the truth, will find it practically impossible to do so.

I sure will not say you are wrong, all i can judge by is my own experience and i think there should be a way to expose fraud with out just bashing, ridiculing, and just being hateful to people. that simply is not what Jesus taught us to do.

LOL!!! My my my my my! Sweetie Pie! Honey Child! Did the big mean man use big hard words? Stop sniffling and lets review:

You, my dear, are the one who came in under false pretenses.

You admitted in front of everybody (AFTER you were found out), you came in here to silence the conversation because you didn’t want the subject discussed.

After your pathetic ruse was discovered, you began vomiting bible verses, and tried to convince us of your mission to stop all discussion about this particular cult, because there were so many more important church frauds that needed our attention...and what these frauds were, that needed our Immediate Attention?...somehow seemed to slip your freakin’ mind.

I actually do feel for you somewhat...it’s a tremendous shock when you value your own gray matter so highly, that you honestly believe no one can see through your schemes...then discover to your horror, that literally everybody can. What a terrible downfall...to arrive believing you’re a genius 007, and to depart feeling like a mongoloid. It must be crushing.

But take heart...you can improve your IQ. Given your antipathy...woops, sorry, forgot...given your “discomfort” with long, hard words, I would unreservedly suggest getting into the habit of reading. Everyone writes to the level they read, and if you don’t read, you can’t write. You’ll know you’re advancing when you begin to enjoy books without pictures.

I forgive you your “liar” epithet, after your comedic embarrassment at your deceit being found out, it’s such a classic example of transference I wish psychology students could use your rhetorical flailing on this thread as an exhibit in their dissertations. I do admit to backbiting, however...I spoke to you sharply and hold you in disdain, for reasons already mentioned. False flags, fifth columns, poseurs, and manipulators with agendas get short shrift with me, and well they should. You have growing up to do.

And books to read! LOL

P. S. : Don’t forget to google up some names of fraudulent churches, now, because if you run into any of us, you can exercise your acting talents again; remind us of what your vital holy mission was when you decided this thread needed your corrupting input. Bettrr write it dpwn, once people dtart telling stories, not keeping your stories straight would prove to be another embarassing moment for you, and you do not handle the embarrassment of discovery well.

Well, I’m satisfied you learned something...or should have learned something...was it good for you too?

OH, WHAT A TANGLED WEB WE WEAVE, WHEN FIRST WE PRACTICE TO DECEIVE. Here endeth the lesson.

I know you are writing all of this b.s. for the benefit of others who are reading this, by the others i mean the ones who you so cleverly added their names so that it would not be just you and me, then you rattle off a bunch of stuff that is not true.

I assure you i would not know how to start a ruse even if i wanted to, i was just telling you what Jesus said, but you seem to hate that so much you just seem to have gone completely stark raven mad with hatred and purposely twisted it all out of shape.

I actually do feel for you somewhat...it’s a tremendous shock when you value your own gray matter so highly, that you honestly believe no one can see through your schemes...then discover to your horror, that literally everybody can. You should be able to see your own screw up here then, but please don,t cry over me, i am beginning to think maybe i am in better shape than i thought i was.

Yes, i will have to admit that i have worried a lot about my skills in reading and writing, but after reading your Genuineness i find i have nothing to worry about.

Yes i got quite the kick out of it, and feel much better for it, I now know that you people ( who ever us is )are not interested in exposing Fraud, you are just filled with hate toward the Mormon people just for one reason and one reason only and that is polygamy, don,t you understand that Men are not happy if they have to put up with the same old hay bag day in and day out, that is why so many Men would go for polygamy.

But wait, don,t go yet, as far as the Mormon church is concerned Polygamy is just in the rites, temple marriage and that sort of stuff, it is just religion, so the self-righteous hypocrites should love it regardless of what denomination of hypocrites they are from because religion is what they love, but they want no part of God.

Thank you very much Mister, or MISS, i learned a lot.

... you are just filled with hate toward the Mormon people just for one reason and one reason only...

Again; you display how wrong your remote viewing analysis is.

1. The people are NOT 'hated', as you so assuredly claim, but pitied: for being TRAPPED in a demonic deception. We PRAY for those caught in mormonISM's web all the time.

2. We do hate - you are correct in that - but it is directed toward the Prince and the Power of the air which is yanking the strings of this 'religion' and any OTHER thing that sets itself up against GOD's kingdom.

Well any way, i had a rough night last night, its so seldom that i ever run across any one smarter than i am , some one so full of wisdom, some one so educated , so full of honor always trying to help their underlings, some one so pure, i guess i just could not take it so i don,t think i should talk to you any more.

You must have made one hell of an impression on me, i am not kidding you were even in my dream, talk about a rough night

Maybe i should not even tell it but i do have these stupid dreams now an then but the one i had last night topped them all and i don,t know how in the hell you were in it but there you were, the high light.

You see, i dreamed that i had died and was trying to get to heaven.

I made the journey up to the gates of st peter and knocked, st peter came and opened the gate and kind of looked around a little then he smiled at me and then said where is your white stallion?

Well i stuttered around a little then said i did not have one, st peter said sorry but you have to have a white stallion to get in here.

Well you can see how i would be shaken at that kind of news, but i started back down to earth thinking that i better condition my self for hell for that is where i would likely go, that was the worst feeling i had ever experienced.

But on the way back down i saw some one coming up and i don,t know how i knew it but i knew it was you, and i thought My Hero, why that entered my mind i don,t know.

I could see the saintliness, the superiority, the righteousness and even though i never even thought that you would speak to me it gave me hope.

You acted kind of like st peter did, that is you never looked at me until after you looked around some and then you asked me what i was doing coming back this way.

I said Sir st peter will not let me in to the gates with out a white stallion, you acted kind of angry then you looked me over real good from head to toe and at the same time looked very disgusted.

Right then if i had any doubt that i was bound for hell it vanished, but then you kind of got a smirky smile on your face and said come on back up with me.

Then you gave me that disgusted look over again and said i will have a talk with peter.

So we went back up and you said wait here and you went up and got st peter to open up and spoke to him for several minutes.

I could not hear what was being said but pretty soon St Peter came to me just madder than a stirred up hornet an said, i thought i told you to bring a white stallion.

Not a dammed jackass.
