Featured Term (selected at random):
A temporary convering of the head and shoulders of the persons who are getting married. The bridal veil is the best known and dates from ancient times. In some countries it covers both the bride and groom as they proceed to their new home. Also, occasionally it was worn during the time of bethrothal. For centuries the custom prevailed of holding a veil over the married couple while they were solemnly blessed. Some rituals prescribe that the veil completely cover the bride and only the shoulders of the groom. Formerly the bridal veil could be flame-colored, yellow, or purple. Today it is usually white and long. (Etym. Latin velum, covering.)
Neber have seen colored bridal veils either.

In the Roman empire, the traditional bridal veil was vermilion, a bright yellow tending to orange. I assume that tradition continued in to Christian custom for some time.
The white bridal outfit, iirc, didn’t become the norm until the 19th century. Could that signal a culture that was getting to be less about matrimony and more about “weddings”?
Probably signalled a culture that was getting more prudish and thought red was evil.
Interesting thesis. Do you have any data?
Never heard of colored veils, either.
And I can’t remember the last time I saw a bride with any kind of veil. I’d be happy to see covered brides. So many today are not wearing modest gowns.
Nope
