I once opined that a certain prominent political figure was a “jack Mormon”, and was told I didn’t know what I was talking about. After all, he shaved and wore a suit, a pretty expensive one at that. Fact was, he had joined LDS for purely social reasons and to buttress his political ambitions.

I still maintain nobody can be both a “good Mormon” and a liberal Democrat at the same time. There are just too many glaring gaps in doctrine to provide much overlap.

Back in the 1070s I knew several teens who joined the LDS for the same reason.
