Cher refuses to back down from anti-Mormon slur

Cher is refusing to back down from a Twitter comment she posted on Friday that is considered a slur against members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The pop singer and passionate Democrat sent out the tweet urging President Barack Obama and his aides to get organized or risk losing November's election to Republican Romney, who is a Mormon.

Cher's tweet said: "I Feel if he (Obama) doesn't get all his DUCKS IN A ROW we'll b forced 2 listen 2Uncaring Richy Rich! The whitest man in MAGIC UNDERWEAR in the WH (White House)."

Some news agencies reported that LDS leaders were upset over the reference to the garment won by faithful adult members of the church to remind them of sacred temple ordinances.

ABC 4 called a representative for the Church who said no LDS leaders ever issued a response to the tweet, nor would they be expected to.

Several people claiming to be Mormons were upset with Cher for making the remark, and responded directly to Cher via Twitter. One person called her an "anti-Mormon bigot."

Referring to the garment as "magic" is considered a derogatory slur by many faithful members of the church.

Cher is not the first prominent figure to catch heat over a tweet about the garments.

In February during a GOP primary debate, New York Times columnist Charles Blow tweeted: "Let me just tell you this Mitt "Muddle Mouth": I'm a single parent and my kids are *amazing*! Stick that in your magic underwear."

Blow later apologized, saying, "Btw, the comment I made about Mormonism during Wed.'s debate was inappropriate, and I regret it. I'm willing to admit that with no caveats."

A Buzzfeed.com article described Mormon garments as "...a rough equivalent of Jews' yarmulkes or tzitzit."

Buzzfeed's article also noted:

"It's difficult to imagine a Times writer making a similar joke about a Jewish politician."

So hypocritical of Cher to make an anti-Mormon slur.

How many times did she do PSA’s on homosexual tolerance?

Especially as one of Armenian heritage, why would she support Muslim President?

Will the Jews in Israel, the ones that don’t accept Jesus, go to the same place that the mormons will go in the after life ?

You said...
“who gives a damn what she says.....you folks are giving her way more attention than she deserves”

Best post ever.

The reason Cher is doing this is exactly to get attention

Congratulations Holy Agent of Christ RaisingCain on your unmitigated success in inciting a fellow conservative to rage in a theological debate here on FreeRepublic.

While our nation faces the greatest legislative, financial, and security threats in its history, when most conservatives of faith are nightly praying to the Lord God Almighty to spare our once-great nation, you find the time to attack a fellow Freeper on the grounds that you consider his faith to be a cult.

Lukewarm Christians may feel that allying with a group of wholesome people whose religious trappings (albeit contrary to your teachings) do not instill counter-conservative values is OK, but not you! You go that extra mile and cast down the enemy of our collective enemy: The Liberal.

The Obama Campaign salutes you! And as an added bonus, I daresay that upon dying you’ll receive a merit badge for helping God out with all that tedious judging! (I hear God loves it when you decide for Him who is saved and who isn’t!)

On a less tongue-in-cheek note, hows about we reserve our hate for that which stifles liberty. For that which destroys ambition? For that which holds the Constitution in contempt? For that which weakens our borders? Or even for that which unduly taxes the efforts of our most productive? There’ll be plenty of time to hate the Mormons, the Pastafarians, or the squeaky-voiced after that, eh slugger?

While not totally onboard with your rant, I am definitely in tune with the general principle.

I have become very frustrated in recent months at the anti-Mormon bigotry that has cropped up since the Romney candidacy — most especially because for literally YEARS prior to that, Free Republic had an ongoing and apparently popular LDS caucus that engendered no hatred, caused no controversy, and was utterly unremarkable — just as the Catholic caucus is today.

It’s heartbreaking. In my experience over the years, I have had a lot of dealings with Mormons. I have found them to be, for the most part, honest, hardworking, patriotic, generous to a fault, clean living, and strong supporters of the family. In short, they tend to epitomize the character traits Conservatives admire most — or say they do, anyhow.

(There’s also been a few dickheads, but every organization attracts its share of those.)

Things have sure changed since Romney. The LDS caucus is gone, as are most Mormons (or they’re keeping very quiet), jokes about magic underwear are rampant, with polygamy fighting it out for second place.

Sad.

” though NOT ONE can verbalize their reasons therefore” I have a clear reason to tell the truth about Mormonism - it leads people to hell. I don’t want them to go there.

Gee, and your's (Religion, WHATEVER IT IS???....care to tell us???) will GUARANTEE that NONE of those who believe like you do, WILL END UP in "HELL," ....REGARDLESS of "what they do," or what "kind of live they lead???....

or conversely, be ASSURED a place in "HEAVEN" simply for being a member of your sect???

Sounds a little like Islam if you ask me?

True believers who die in the defense of Allah, Muhammud or Islam are GUARANTEED a seat in their heaven; all others (Kafur...ie, non-believers) are to be consigned to Hell.

Might I suggest you put down the crack pipe???

I had no idea he was a Mormon! It would explain why he was lying about Free Republic and its posters. It gives me all the more reason to make fun of him then.

“On a less tongue-in-cheek note, hows about we reserve our hate for that which stifles liberty. For that which destroys ambition? For that which holds the Constitution in contempt? For that which weakens our borders? Or even for that which unduly taxes the efforts of our most productive?”

So basically you’re asking me to vote third party. Great idea!

She and the other liberal cowards in the media/entertainment industry know that Mormons are a pretty safe target. The libs don't like them and Biblically orthodox Christians rightly see their religious views as errant and cultic. It would be interesting to see if Cher or some other celeb would make a similar quip about the Mohammedans.

I doubt it. The Jews have a covenant with God. Perhaps you should ask a Jew or a Mormon.

“SO WHAT?”

So what that I disproved every claim in your post and that you were utterly wrong to accuse fellow Freepers of being a bunch of bigots with “no reason” to oppose Mormonism? How about instead of emoting, you apologize for being bigoted and utterly wrong with your facts?

On the other hand I can PRODUCE many, many such examples of B. Hussein Obama’s (who you obviously support and prefer to Mittens) defending and supporting Islamic Jihadists and the Muslim Brotherhood who have made it their GOAL to “Destroy our Miserable House from within by our own hand....”

Now here’s the real “so what” post. So basically, unless I prove Mormons are serial pedophiles or mass murderers, I shouldn’t condemn Mormonism, which is a system of silly frauds piled one atop the other that sends people to hell? Does not compute.

So all you’ve done is pile one emotional and utterly false post upon another. Good job.

The moment you have to apologize for evil and demand others be silent on behalf of some candidate... is the moment you should realize that, number one, your candidate is unacceptable, and, number two, what you’re fighting for has nothing to do with God, the Truth, or the country as a whole.

“or conversely, be ASSURED a place in “HEAVEN” simply for being a member of your sect???”

It has nothing to do with “my sect” and everything to do with Jesus Christ’s death on the cross. That gift is available to all, including you.

I just did a google search (I typed in Mormonism Free Republic, and again Mormonism FreeRepublic) within the time frame of 1998 to 2004, and the first two results are anti-Mormon references. There were no further results, though that doesn’t mean there weren’t any. I then tried searching LDS Caucus Free Republic. No results at all.

Take it up with God:

Joh 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
