FULL TITLE: Fifty shades of grey forcing Bible to take a back seat: Enterprising hotel manager replaces Gideons bible with copies of the racy novel
It is the erotic thriller that has had blushing women rushing to the book store for their fix of 'mummy porn.'
With sales totting up to 1m books and ebooks per week and the author herself netting approximately £862,069 per week for the 20 million copies sold worldwide, it seems that Fifty Shades of Grey is the novel of the year.
One hotel manager certainly thinks so and he is swopping the Gideon bible, famed for being available in hotel rooms around the world, for copies of the book. Manager of Damson Dene Hotel, Wayne Bartholomew replacing copies of the Gideon Bible with copies of racy best-seller Fifty Shades of Grey
Manager of Damson Dene Hotel, Wayne Bartholomew replacing copies of the Gideon Bible with copies of racy best-seller Fifty Shades of Grey
Wayne Bartholomew, Damson Dene hotel manager and star of Channel 4s first The Hotel, is making the exchange today for the benefit of guests and in response to the online chatter from his 3,210 Facebook Fans.
'Fifty Shades of Grey is all that people are talking about at the moment, but I know that some are too shy to buy it for themselves.
I thought it would be a special treat for our guests to find it in their bedside cabinet and that includes the men too.
They are as desperate to get their hands on a copy as the women.'
Whilst we are swopping one best seller for another the similarities dont end there. The Gideon bible is full of references to sex and violence, although its written using more formal language, so James book is easier to read.

Just asked my “inner goddess” and she said to tell you great review! LOL
You’ve got me beat! I’m still working to “demi-goddess” status! Thanks! :)
Nothing that happens these days in the UK will surprise me.
“Fifty Shades of Grey: The Musical” on youtube is hilarious.

Shades of Bill Clinton !! I seem to recall he was into mummies.
Just read, the “author” is netting 1.34 million per week on this book. I am thinking this would be a gold mine for Obama’s campaign. All he would have to do is a little play on the title, use it as his campaign slogan, something like “Fifty Shades of the Truth.”. The women would swoon.
There are two kinds of people at motels:
1) Those who need a break from driving because they are travelling.
2) Those who are in a motel because life circumstance -- a divorce, a death, or an addiction -- forced them there. The Bible is mostly for them.
But I'd have to face myself in the mirror everyday. Even that much money isn't worth it.
As a member of the Gideons for 12 years, and having distributed thousands of KJV or NKJV Bibles badged by the Gideons International, I can tell you two things that few ordinary visitors but all experienced hotel owners, managers, and maids know:
(1) The number of suicides that the presence of the Bible has prevented. Often enough the last solace the suicider resorts to is the Gideon-placed Bible, and many conversions have thus taken place.
(2) The number of adulterous affairs that have been cut short, for the same reason.
This Wayne Bartholemew will probably be sacked for his stupidity in undermining his profitability and his hotel's reputation.
The Bibles placed cost him nothing. They are placed by local Bible-believing business and professional men who support the community by taking time from their own livelihoods to place Bibles. Every Gideon is an enrolled member of a local church, and it is those churches who provide the funds for the printing of the Bibles.
If a traveller defaces or removes the room Bible, it is replaced with a new, clean one. Who freely replaces that? The local Gideons. But when one displaces the Bibles with expensive pornographic trash, and the traveller takes it, who is going to replace it? The operating cost to the hotel and/or the travellers.
By eliminating the room Bibles, paid for by evangelical churches, you will have spurned this silent witness of their ministry to travellers, and it will be mentioned in sermons and by word of mouth. As a consequence, overt support from the local churches will be diminished and your support of pornography will be publicized. Many travellers who are themselves Christians, will note the absence of your aupport for the Bible and the Christian culture, and will not return.
Wayne, do you really want to take this path?
(Note: This news is from England, whose National Gideons have begun to prefer the New International Version to supplant the "old-fashioned" King James Bible. That may be partof the problem.)
I thought the small copies handed out at grade schools were kinda cool but of course there's no more of that un-pc stuff allowed.
And maybe a few of them got something from it.
We would hope that to be the case. And for that reason alone a Bible should be available if they have none on hand themselves.
I’ve done my share of unwilling motel living and know there is always a bar close by to make a persons problems worse.
Of course had I been a better student of the Scriptures I may not have been there but that’s something else.
By many things the Bible tells us, i am not surprised, jolted maybe but not suprised.
Fifty Shades of Grey should be boycotted and prohibited from our schools, churches, libraries, bookstores, the Internet, homes, hotels and workplaces.
When I Do becomes a vow of celibacy, theres bound to be trouble, and those problems go waaaay beyond sex.
Homosexuals are much more free to admit to their abominations
than what a husband or wife is to hint at something that is normal between a man and woman.
Except for your use of a potty language word, it was fine. If you wish to see it again to repost it, let me know and I’ll Freepmail it to you.
It’s not a big deal, but I appreciate the response. I’ll be more tactful in the future.
Amazing how fast it’s happening.

A hotel to avoid.
Stay in a Bed and Breakfast instead. Much less expensive.
