Apollo 11 capcom and Apollo 16 lunar module pilot Charlie Duke addresses Monte Sano Methodist Church in Alabama, July 22, 2012. Congregants snacked on Moon Pies and Tang before heading into the sanctuary to commemorate Buzz Aldrin's "lunar communion" 43 years ago, Friday [Glenn Baeske/The Huntsville Times].

"It seemed only appropriate that astronaut Charlie Duke - the 10th human to set foot on the moon - was the guest of honor at the church's "Lunar Communion" service Sunday morning.

Duke said he didn't have a spiritual experience, per se, during the 20 hours he spent combing the moon's surface.

But after returning to a hero's welcome and diving back into the business world, he said he began longing for something more.

Duke said he found what he was looking for when he reluctantly agreed to attend a three-day Bible study at a tennis club in New Braunfels, Texas.

Charlie Duke's experiences following his Apollo 16 "high" became a part of his testimony, which I think is included in a video available on his website, if I remember correctly.

God bless Charlie Duke!

("How do you want to be remembered?") As an astronaut that accomplished his mission...that I did it with skill, and focus, and commitment. I gave my all to it, and I'm not too excited about having "Charlie Duke, 10th man to walk on the Moon" on my tombstone. It's more.

The Apollo mission was a great accomplishment in my life but my service to God through my faith is even a greater one. In Ecclesiastes, the important thing is to know God, to love God, and to walk humbly before God. And I want to be remembered as a man who did that.

Duke said he found what he was looking for when he reluctantly agreed to attend a three-day Bible study at a tennis club in New Braunfels, Texas.

Charlie Duke later led Bible studies in New Braunfels and it was there that Mrs. Gamecock first professed her faith when she was but 15.

Truth be told, I have a Charlie Duke action figure on my credenza, standing next to my John Calvin bobblehead.

Funny how schools rarely/never mentioned Aldrin’s communion or the Apollo 8 quotation from Scripture and their Merry Christmas greeting.

They did, however, spend a lot of time on Ed Mitchell’s stupid, pointless, unauthorized ESP experiments.

Mrs. Gamecock just told me she would like a Charlie Duke action figure to put next to our John Calvin bobblehead.

Hey, check ebay. You'll be sorry glad you did. :O)

I am a bit envious of your Calvin bobblehead though.
