Is Mitt Romney a Christian or not?
Herald News Chicago Suntimes ^ | August 23, 2012 | George Gaspar

Edited on 08/23/2012 8:26:36 PM PDT by Jim Robinson. [history]

In recent decades the Republican Party has made a person’s religious beliefs an issue for election to political office, despite the First Amendment to the Constitution explicitly forbidding this.

For the Republicans, that requirement is a person must be a Christian. Mitt Romney has chosen staunch Roman Catholic Paul Ryan as his running mate. That should help divert some of the concern about Romney himself being a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints — a Mormon.

There has been debate, including in The Herald-News’ OpenLine, about whether or not Mormons are true Christians. Most people don’t know what Mormons believe, so I thought I would publicize some of their basic precepts, all of which can be easily confirmed.

Mormons believe that “God” created multiple worlds with people living on them. Multiple gods exist but each has its own universe. All people existed as pre-mortal spirit children of God and are then physically born on this earth and are subject only to our specific “God.” If you follow God and his law (the precepts of the LDS Church) you can reach the highest level of heaven and become a “God” also.

Our “God” was a mortal on another planet who reached this highest level and became “God.” He had a mortal wife who also became a “Goddess.” He physically had sexual relations with Mary and Jesus became mortal from his spirit life as the eldest son of “God.”

Mormons recognize God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit, but all three are not one substance but completely different beings forming one “godhead.”

They feel the early Christian Church became corrupted by pagan influences at the Council of Nicea. The Church was finally “restored” through appearances by God, Jesus and some of the apostles to Joseph Smith, beginning in 1820 at age 14. (Smith and his mother and father all believed in “visions, prophecies and folk magic.”) Joseph Smith viewed himself as the “prophet” of God who spoke to the people through him. The LDS still has a “prophet” who can have visions from God and announce new Church beliefs, such as the acceptance of African Americans into the “priesthood” in 1978.

Further beliefs: When people die, the “spirit” is separated from the body and either goes to “spirit heaven” or “spirit prison” waiting for the second coming; Jesus appeared to the people of America after his resurrection; and God, Jesus, and “resurrected beings” have bodies of flesh and bone.

They believe there is no salvation outside the LDS Church, there is no salvation without accepting Joseph Smith as a prophet, and Satan originated the idea that belief in Jesus Christ alone is all that is needed for salvation.

Mormons believe the entire world must be converted to Mormonism, and they proselytize aggressively.

The final item is their belief in “temple garments,” often referred to as “Mormon underwear.” These are worn day and night, and are required to be worn to enter a temple. They are believed to be a constant reminder of the LDS covenant with God and are a “source of protection from evil.”

These are some of the beliefs of Mitt Romney, the man who would be president; beliefs he does not want to discuss. What do you think?

I never said I did not want to see Religion Forum posts. I am making a simple comment that this particular topic is a rather silly topic to debate, since the topic can be resolved in one or two sentences, and I believe that the reason it is being rehashed over and over and particularly right now is political and aimed at Romney.

Satanists and their Black Masses, they mimic, mock the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Satanists steal consecrated hosts to desecrate~!

What does that tell you? Satan believes, the Eucharist is
true. The “abomination of desolation” takes place when
the anti-Christ attempts to abolish the Eucharist. The A.O.D. is prophesied with the “continual sacrifice” which is the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

Mormons are not Christian. Heaven through the prophets said this in 08 when Romney was running then. Pray for Mormons to convert at the time of the Great Warning.

message to Father Melvin Doucette

“I call you all to be loyal to Me especially you My brother Melvin and all My brothers and sisters living in every part of the world. When I was on earth I was loyal to My Heavenly Father every day of My life on earth. I came to do His will. You too should have the same reason wanting to follow My will every day.

There are some people these days that are teaching falsehood but saying that it comes from Me. Only My church can teach the true Gospel, which I brought into the world. There will only be the one Gospel and this is what you are to follow with all your heart. St. Paul in his earlier days was a persecutor of My Church. He wanted to destroy the Church I had founded on the Apostles. At the end I woke him up and he was converted. He came to believe in Me and he followed the true Gospel all the years after that until his death as a martyr in Rome. DO NOT LISTEN TO SUCH PEOPLE as those who belong to New Age or THE CHURCH OF THE LATTER DAY SAINTS. THERE IS NO TRUTH IN WHAT THEY TEACH. Follow Me in My Church and you will be blessed. I am your Brother who is calling you and who is ready to help you in this life and bring you home to heaven one day.”

would you be so kind , with your infinite wisdom as to give us all a complete list of the requirements for salvation. If we must be sinless please list all sins. If we must “obey” please list each item specifically that we must do to obey. Thank you so much!!

Of course we must be sinless. And of course we must obey God’s law. The problem is we are born sinners incapable of keeping the law. But my substitute, Jesus Christ, kept the law perfectly and He was sinless. When God the Father looks at me He doesn’t see my sins and my lack of faithfulness, He sees Christ because I am wearing His spotless robes of righteousness. Salvation is in Him totally, completely, and perfectly, not in anything within myself and not in my good deeds or law keeping. In fact, the Bible tells us that if we attempt to add our good works to grace, then grace is of no effect.

“For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.” We are saved today exactly the same way Abraham was saved. That’s the only way any man has ever been saved or will ever be saved.

I have no infinite wisdom, I simply believe my Bible.

And how do we obtain salvation through Jesus? What formula do we use to obtain imputed righteousness? What key steps must we take? If We do not believe in Jesus as the Son of God,are we saved? If we believe that Jesus is real and the Son of God ,then what is next step to cross the salvation finish line?

There is no formula. As it says in Jonah, salvation is of the Lord. He is the author and finisher of our faith. Salvation is from beginning to end an act of grace. Read what Christ said to Nicodemus in John 3 very carefully. He likened the Holy Spirit to the wind. No ones knows where it comes from or where it goes. Pray for the Lord to open your eyes and heart to the truth, pray for Him to lead you to an understanding of your true spiritual condition before Him and His way of salvation.

I’m praying for you now.

The Catholic Church does not accept the Mormon Baptism. Mine doesn't accept infant baptism.

I Love it when a protestant (the first Christian dissidents) after 1,600 years, decided to change the rules and the way things are done...20,000 or so denominations, all with their own way of dong things, want do determine what is and what is not Christianity.....why not just go back to the beginning, rejoin the Catholic church, and remove all doubt??

Noo!! Don’t pray for me . Pray for you . There is no prayer of intercession in the Bible!!. Did you not know that in your study? I am totally saved through belief. You doubt salvation through belief. You are a doubter. Pray for yourself.John 3:16 , Repent!!

I have no idea what you think I believe. I believe salvation is by grace alone through the means of faith alone because that’s what the Bible plainly teaches (Ephesians 2). Abraham believed God and it was counted to him for rightousness. So of course I believe that a Christian believes, but belief is not what saves. The object of my belief saves. The object of my faith is a person, Jesus Christ—the Jesus Christ of Scripture, not the fantasy Jesus of Mormonism. Abraham believed because God graciously saved Him. Before anyone can even see the kingdom of God they must be born again (see John 3:3). In other words, belief is a by product of His regenerating grace. I believe because of His grace and His grace sustains my belief.

John 3:16 doesn’t enter in this discussion at all. You have apparently read something into the text that isn’t there. It merely says that the believing ones will be saved. You are reading it as if it emphasizes doing something (believing) rather than being something (one of the believing ones). John 3:16 does not say “if I do the act of believing, then I shall have eternal life.” Rather the verse is saying that “if I am one of the group of believing ones, then I will have eternal life.” It doesn’t delve into how I become a believing one or who can become a believing one.

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9)

I do not understand any of the above, to me it makes the same kind of sense as the book of Mormon.

message to Father Melvin Doucette

Why would you expect any one besides a Catholic to believe Father Melvin Doucette and not believe Joesepth Smith?

I am not a Catholic nor a Mormon so i don,t believe Joesph Smith and i take a message such as the one claimed by Father Melvin Doucette with a grain of salt.

The only point i am trying to make is that Jesus came first to the house of Israel, The first people Jesus preached to was the false teachers in his own house, he also pointed out that his enemies were those of his own household.

no abortion on PEI.

I don,t think i have heard of any queers in the leadership of the Mormon Church either.

We all need to base our actions on what Jesus told us to do, but if every one including myself did that we would not be having this discussion, and needless to say that is not going to happen.

I guess there would not be too much wrong with that but i believe the Catholic Church also has things that go against what Jesus taught.

mat 20:24
And hearing this, the ten became indignant with the two brothers.

25
But Jesus called them to Himself and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them.

26
“It is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant,

27
and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave;

28
just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

The Catholic Church has their very important men and then the lesser ones and then the peons, and is an absolute contradiction to what Jesus taught, and so do many other Churches who left the catholic Church.

How many of the peons could even get close enough to the pope, or for that matter even a cardinal to talk to them?

Not to mention tithes which any one who is even half way knowledgeable on the Bible knows that tithing was a tax paid to the government of Israel and collected by the Leviticus priesthood.

That is just a couple little details, or maybe it is some very big details.

I have met lots of very good people who are Catholic,s and i have met lots of good people from other Churches, that is people who believes in what Jesus told us to do.

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Also, any one who likes to read the Bible should realize just how lucky they are that the reformation happened, other wise there may not be Bibles for every one to read, the people would just know what the Church wanted them to know.

There is no perfect Church, that is why God made it possible for every one to have a bible to read.

And you may have noticed that if we all were so busy doing the things that Jesus told us to do in regards to one another we would be much too busy to do the few little things Jesus told us not to do.

I agree. It is by belief in Christ, the object of our belief that we are immediately saved.repent and receive the Holy Spirit. Then we are free to live and all are sinners like Paul in Romans 7 but Jesus sacrificed one time for all that believe and we can not ever fall from salvation. It is wonderful to meet you and God speed.

oh my goodness, you missed something somewhere!!!Belief in Christ, in and of itself, is not enough to get you anywhere.

You cannot possibly believe, that if you believe that Christ is the savior and that He died for our sins,we can live life as we please with no obligations whatsoever....I don't think so. If you teuly believed in Christ, you would follow His teachings and follow the religion that He Himself founded.

You would rather ignore 1,600 years of teaching and truth and make your own rules as you go along. Like Luther, Zwingley, Calvin, HenryVIII, Joseph Smith, you pick and choose which true Christian beliefs that you follow.

Confession...well I don't like that one...infant baptism...well I'll just not go along with that....Transubstantiation, well that's just too hard to comprehend, marriage after divorce...well I really liked spouse #2 or 3...////see how easy it is to be a protestant!!! You get to make up your own rules as you go along and all that stuff about attending Mass EVERY Sunday is just too much work especially when the golf course summons.

wouldn't it be nice if we could really do that???

You are totally right. Mormons aren’t Christians

This isn’t even the real God is. He was never born of another world he’s always been around. forever and ever! He never had any sexual intercourse with Mary, because Mary was a vergin.

I’m a Christian, which means I have personally asked Christ to come into my life and save me from my sins. Mormons don’t do that.
