Laurel Broten is a practicing Catholic who sends her children to Catholic schools. Shes also the education minister of Ontario, Canada. And in a shocking display of infringement of religious freedom, shes just decreed that Catholic schools can no longer teach that abortion is wrong.
Taking away a womans right to choose could arguably be considered one of the most misogynistic actions that one could take, Laurel Broten said during a press conference.Schools are also being forced to establish gay-straight alliances in addition to preaching that abortion is acceptable.Bill 13, she asserted, is about tackling misogyny.
This, quite frankly, is one of the most egregious and outrageous assaults on religious freedom Ive ever heard of. The Catholic Church is ardently against abortion, and defends life in all its capacities. Now, Catholic schools are being forced to choose: go against their religion and principles, or break the law.
And while fighting against bullying and preaching acceptance are important, defending those who have no voice is even more important. Broten claims to respect Catholic education, but this is clearly a blatant attack on the Church and her teachings. The Catechism of the Catholic Church mandates the protection of human life, and Broten is forcing Catholic schools to turn their back on that.
As for misogyny in pro-life beliefs, millions of girls have been aborted over the years. Babies being aborted simply for being female is by no means rare. But where is Brotens outrage over that?
What is truly frightening and offensive about this is that it isnt enough for abortion merely to be legal pro-aborts like Broten clearly want to make it illegal for those who seek to defend life to even have the right to speak out and practice their beliefs! The end goal is not just to keep abortion legal. Its to silence the voices of pro-lifers.
This attack on religious freedom cannot stand.
Problem is she is still practicing, but she’s still not doing it right.
The cardinal basically told her to jump in the lake:

Coming to a Country near you?
I’d like the Vatican herself to smack this down. UNBELIEVABLE.
She should-very publicly -be excommunicated from the Catholic church immediately.
Her children should not be allowed to receive communion.
I would hope she’s already been excommunicated. But the Canadian bishops, alas, have not distinguished themselves by standing up for Church teachings over the years, and this is the result.
What a shame! Liberals will destroy our good friends to the North just like they are doing in the USA.
I see us both spiraling down the same liberal toilet bowl.
Has Canada codified freedom of religion like the US did in the Constitution?
she may call herself anything she wishes...but it doesn’t make her a Catholic...only one’s words followed by one’s actions can do that.
I don’t know whether they have something equivalent to our Bill of Rights or not.
Cronen is trying to prohibit Catholic teaching by referring to Canadian “hate speech laws,” which are very draconian and prohibit any opposition to or even discussion of government-selected protected behaviors or groups (such as abortion or gays), so I’m not sure they have anything that we would consider freedom of speech or freedom of religion.
“Her children should not be allowed to receive communion.”
What did her children do wrong?
She is punishing an entire country’s children for her own sin.
Be that as it may, if her children follow the church's teachings and are Catholics in good standing there is absolutely no reason to withhold the Eucharist from them.
As Christians have known for over 2,000 years (and as tyrants seem incapable of learning), the Church may well be healthiest when it is persecuted.
