And not overly defensive; a seemingly genuine attempt to explain a Mormon article of faith.
Here's what we non- Mormons don't understand -- if what you say is "so."
#1: The Book of Mormon has had over 3,000 changes since the 1830 edition:
* In two 1 Nephi verses, references to God have been changed to "the Son of" God (1 Nephi 11:18; 13:40)
* "White and delightsome" -- with emphasis on the skin color -- was changed to "pure and delightsome"...with a sudden emphasis on an inward nature...e'en tho other BoM verses emphasizing skin color were left untouched.
* A dead king in Mosiah--21:28; 6:5 -- being described as still alive was changed to another king's name (Benjamin was in original BoM text in 21:28, not Mosiah).
You get the point.
So, Resty: Why doesn't the Book of Mormon carry the same qualification like the Bible does as an article of faith? 'Tis quite obvious to all that Joseph Smith didn't get the translation right from the alleged "gold plates."
There's been "many" editions of the Book of Mormon, Resty...with changes That equals "many" translations. Another example is 1 Nephi 20:1. In the 1830 version, "Out of the waters of baptism" was not there. Then the Mormons added it in a later version; then it disappeared in the 1978 version; but then by 1985 it was back. Which translation is correct, Resty? And why were there so many translations of just one single BoM verse?
#2 We could say the same thing about the D&C, Resty. In D&C 114:1...on April 17, 1838 Smith wrote that "David W Patten" was to "perform a mission unto me next spring, in company with others..."...Well, 6 months later -- BEFORE the "next spring" Patten was dead in Missouri.
We are then left with only two options there: Either the Mormon god is not sovereignly omniscient...and didn't know Patten would die...or, Smith gave a false prophecy. He didn't "translate" the "living voice" of the Lord correctly. It was a "mistranslation."
Shouldn't the D&C likewise then have a caveat...a qualifier..."insofar as correctly 'translated'?"
Of all the standard works, why then do Mormons single out the Bible...when even the Mormon church concedes mistranslations in its other works???
Keep things simple and true, makes it easy.
You keep bringing up FACTS like these and you cause DOUBT to creep in.

Does this happen with other denominations caucus threads as well? I wouldn’t know since I don’t bother with caucus threads that I don’t belong to.

Well, Ezra; just WHICH one should MORMONs follow??
Only a very few 'follow' the MORMON scripture; found in D&C 132:58-66 and the 'Prophet' has WARNED them as well.
Perhaps Resty, or Saundra, or DU can say WHY they DO NOT FOLLOW THE PROPHET!
In conclusion let us summarize this grand key, these “Fourteen Fundamentals in Following the Prophet”, for our salvation depends on them.
1. The prophet is the only man who speaks for the Lord in everything.
2. The living prophet is more vital to us than the standard works.
3. The living prophet is more important to us than a dead prophet.
4. The prophet will never lead the church astray.
5. The prophet is not required to have any particular earthly training or credentials to speak on any subject or act on any matter at any time.
6. The prophet does not have to say “Thus Saith the Lord,” to give us scripture.
7. The prophet tells us what we need to know, not always what we want to know.
8. The prophet is not limited by men’s reasoning.
9. The prophet can receive revelation on any matter, temporal or spiritual.
10. The prophet may advise on civic matters.
11. The two groups who have the greatest difficulty in following the prophet are the proud who are learned and the proud who are rich.
12. The prophet will not necessarily be popular with the world or the worldly.
13. The prophet and his counselors make up the First Presidency—the highest quorum in the Church.
14. The prophet and the presidency—the living prophet and the First Presidency—follow them and be blessed—reject them and suffer.
I testify that these fourteen fundamentals in following the living prophet are true. If we want to know how well we stand with the Lord then let us ask ourselves how well we stand with His mortal captain—how close do our lives harmonize with the Lord’s anointed—the living Prophet—President of the Church, and with the Quorum of the First Presidency.
