Federal court forces Christian-owned business to obey HHS mandate

Today, a federal court denied a request to temporarily stop enforcement of the abortion pill mandate, which would force the Christian-owned-and-operated Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc., to provide the “morning-after pill” and “week-after pill” in its health insurance plan, or face crippling fines up to $1.3 million per day.

“The Green family is disappointed with this ruling,” said Kyle Duncan, general counsel for the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty. “They simply asked for a temporary halt to the mandate while their appeal goes forward, and now they must seek relief from the United States Supreme Court. The Greens will continue to make their case on appeal that this unconstitutional mandate infringes their right to earn a living while remaining true to their faith.”

The 10th Circuit judges denied the motion calling the religious burden to the Green family “indirect and attenuated.”

Founded in an Oklahoma City garage in 1972, the Green family has grown Hobby Lobby from one 300-square-foot retail space into more than 500 stores in 41 states.

“It is by God’s grace and provision that Hobby Lobby has endured,” said David Green, founder and CEO. “Therefore we seek to honor God by operating the company in a manner consistent with Biblical principles.”

Hobby Lobby is the largest and only non-Catholic-owned business to file a lawsuit against the HHS mandate.

The Green family has no moral objection to the use of preventive contraceptives and will continue covering preventive contraceptives for its employees. However, the Green family’s religious convictions prohibit them from providing or paying for the abortion-inducing drugs, the “morning-after” and “week-after” pills, which would violate their most deeply held religious belief that life begins at conception.

The business’s lawsuit acts to preserve its right to carry out its mission free from government coercion.

There are now 42 separate lawsuits challenging the HHS mandate, which is a regulation under the Affordable Care Act (aka “Obamacare”).

The Becket Fund led the charge against the unconstitutional HHS mandate, and along with Hobby Lobby represents: Wheaton College, East Texas Baptist University, Houston Baptist University, Belmont Abbey College, Colorado Christian University, the Eternal Word Television Network, and Ave Maria University.

It’s not just companies.

The INDIVIDUAL has the right to religious freedom - objection to HHS mandates.

Don’t allow the government to define religious freedom. This fight belongs to all of us.

The Sebaceous Cyst has to make sure that someone pays for all those "free" procedures that abortionists will be able to charge the Federal Government taxpayers at $5,000 a pop.

Libealism is a cancer that is killing the nation. If decent Americans can be forced to fund the butchering of unborn children, there is nothing they cannot do.

Hobby Lobby is going to be forced to make a decision - whether to obey God, or men.

If it were me - I’d refuse to comply - then cash out when the Tyrants came to collect. Shut down the entire business. Retain the name and refuse to sell it while explaining that it is better to obey God than men.

Christians are going to have to decide now, whether to serve God or serve Mammon.

I agree INVAR.

I find no fault with Hobby Lobby. But it seems that businesses are the only ones fighting the religious fight. The mandate affects all Christians, regardless of where they work.

Do you agree?

That’s a loophole that the feds didn’t forsee. I think it is hilarious. But it will make people hold two jobs.

I don’t see too many preachers who don’t fear government more than they fear God. Very sad. Hagee is the only one I’ve seen lately.

And when Hobby Lobby closes down how many people will be put out of work? 300 stores = thousands laid off.

If I was going to bet, I’d bet the SC agrees with the lower court’s ruling.

Hobby Lobby is one of my favorite stores - my daughter and I can spend way too much time and money there. Happy to support them....

They foresaw it, they know that on 28 hours a week everyone who works for minimum wage or anything like it will be permanently on food stamps. That's what they want, to increase dependency. And, that's what the majority who bother to vote voted for.

No, one job “on record” and the other is cash only. I know a couple of people of who do it in my neighborhood.

Yes. it affects every Christian. We either refuse to comply with the unbiblical dictates of man to follow God - or we reject God out of fear of men.

Of course - Totalitarian regimes like this one is becoming, will not tolerate anyone finding loopholes or refusing to comply. Those who do refuse will be made examples of, their property and wealth seized for redistribution and themselves gulag-bound for re-education or extermination.

Such is the history of Marxists far more tolerant than those now in power.

Yesterday the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit went in favor of Wheaton College, so these questions are again going to have to be tackled by the Supremes.

Look for an increase in “civil disobedence” practices.

I predict we could very well see the beginings of a second American civil war down the road.

I agree with Hobby Lobby but I refuse to shop there. From what I have seen of their stock, at least 75% of what they sell is made in China—and I suspect that percentage is much higher. I guess it is okay to be complicit in the slaughter of innocents if they’re half a world away.

Events like this just beg for a forum on how to be creatively and theatrically rebellious of Obamacare.
