It has been a couple of weeks since the death of Robert Bork, which occurred shortly before Christmas and didnt really get the news coverage that Bork merited.
Bork died at age 85. In 1987, he became a national headline when President Ronald Reagan nominated him to the Supreme Court. He was a judicial conservative, a strict constructionist. He warned about the road America was embarking upon in neglecting its Constitutional principles, and saw doom and gloom ahead. He was grimly pessimistic about America generally, dreading modern liberalisms grip on the nation. Liberalism, Bork insisted, was pushing America toward decline. We were headed to hell in a hand-basket. A decade after his failed confirmation, Bork authored a bestselling book tellingly titled, Slouching Towards Gomorrah: Modern Liberalism and American Decline.
Bork had seen liberalism up close and full throttleand at its open-throated angriest. During his unsuccessful confirmation hearings in 1987, he was plainly smeared. He was hysterically and unfairly portrayed by radical abortion feminists and the likes of Senator Ted Kennedy as an abuser and assaulter of womena Neanderthal, a kind of political/cultural gargoyle. Liberals demonized Bork and railroaded his nomination, ushering in a whole new incivility and politicization to the judicial nomination process. Liberal journalists literally dug through Borks trash looking for anything to attack the man; they went to the nearby video store to find out what he rented.
Hmmm, they rubbed their hands together hopefully, any X-rated flicks, Judge Bork?
Alas, that wasnt Robert Borks universe. They learned that Bork had an affinity not for pornographic film but for Fred and Ginger movies.

On the bright side, if Bork had been confirmed, he would be replaced today by an Obama appointee.
Not to make light of the death of a great man, which he was, but sometimes God has a plan which isn’t obvious to us at the moment.
“Well,” Bork says, “I’d like to talk to Ted Kennedy. What happened between us is in the past. I’d like to forgive him, and let bygones be bygones.”
“Ted Kennedy is not here,” Saint Peter tells him.
I got to spend a fair amount of time with him, back in the day, when he was a visiting professor at George Mason Lw School. Really enjoyed discussing Constitutional theory with him. Pity he never made it to SCOTUS.
I just agree with you wholeheartedly.
Bork clearly saw the trends -- that they were like a reaction that once begun, cannot be stuffed back in the beaker to begin again. Perhaps he did more by pronouncing a sentence on our progress through writing rather than through decisions being muffled by eight coadjucators.
He was a bright light in a darkening world.
Not, four. Twelve to sixteen. When someone comes out at the end of it with his "conservative" principles intact, its against all odds. Usually, there are some years that pass while reality has a go at you, and you re-learn principles at some cost that schools and media have tried to cover over or deny.
Let your ideological enemies educate your kids for you, and its a miracle if their minds and morals are intact at the end of it. We are losing entire generations and will continue to do so until we solve this problem.
