Can a Pope be Removed from Office?

Q: In a recent piece you explained that the Pope can resign if he chooses. To me that raises another question: What would happen if a Pope became so mentally debilitated that he didn’t know what he was doing? It seems to me that he wouldn’t be able to resign under those circumstances. Is there some legal mechanism that would allow the Church to remove him, and call for a conclave to elect a new Pope? Or is there at least a way for the cardinals to take charge of running the Church until that Pope passes away? –Paul

Heh heh...no, I just looked up his bio. Isn’t the difference between a monsignor and a cardinal just the color? Purple vs. red?

I don’t know the difference in their clothes. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Cardinal in full fig, and when I’ve seen Monsignors in uniform, they were celebrating Mass and dressed in the vestments of the season. We had one for our pastor in San Antonio at one point, but that was Father Jim, the cowboy priest, so he’d be in plain black, with Western boots, outside of Mass.

It’s always nice to find out just who doesn’t read an entire post before they respond.
