When the next Papal Conclave meets behind closed doors to replace the retiring Pope Benedict XVI, the United States will have an unprecedented voice in the process. Eleven cardinal electors, almost 10 percent of the conclave, will be Americans -- the largest share the country has ever had, even though it has historically had a large Catholic population. The retiring pope gets credit for the greater influence of the U.S.

Pretty sure European countries have the most with Italy having more that any other European countries

Here is the list
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_living_cardinals

“”Finally, is there a truly conservative cardinal anywhere in the Americas?””

I would rather say strong Traditional Catholic since conservatism can even be considered a form of liberalism to the Traditional catholic

And yes, there are strong Traditional Cardinals in the America’s. Cardinal Edwin Frederick O’Brien comes to mind, but there are others

xzins:

Cardinal Burke is very traditional, but he was moved to Rome and is the Chief Canon Lawyer. Cardinals Dolan, George, and DiNardo are solid as is Cardinal O’Brian who was the Archbishop of the U.S. Military Diocese and I would put him more in line with Cardinal Burke. I would think all of these Cardinals would favor somone more in tuned with Pope Benedict.

Cardinal O’Malley is ok, Mahoney, I have never been a fan of. Rigali is no progressive type either, not a traditionalist in terms of Liturgy, etc, but no progressive.

In the end I think all the Americans would follow the Group I cited above ad those guys are the ones who will influence American votes. From what I gathered, in the end it seems that all of the U.S. Cardinals eventually backed Cardinal Ratzinger, some on the 1st ballot, some 2nd, all by the 4th.

No. The Holy Spirit will choose the next pope. Funny, the media couldn't see Karol Józef Wojtyła or Joseph Ratzinger. I just have to wonder at those who not only hate the church, but have as much understanding of the Magisterium as earthworms do of the internal combustion engine, attempting to discern its leaders or its dogma.

I agree with what you just wrote, there is no doubt that Benedict XVI has appointed some strong Cardinals.

Just last week Cardinal Burke came out with this..
