Is he suggesting that because 81% of the victims by male priests were themselves male is somehow connected to the question of whether the perpetrators were homosexual ?

Uh, I thought priests are supposed to be celibate. Therefore, they do not have sex. If they do not have sex, how are they designated as ‘gay’ priests or ‘straight’ priests? Do they fill out a questionnaire that asks: If you had sex who would you prefer? I don’t think so! If they do have sex they should no longer be priests. Am I wrong about this?

What really pisses me off is that it seems that these priests are having more sex than I am!! :)

I’m with you on that. No matter what faith you are the minute it is found out your child has been molested call the police! Members of any clergy are not above the law, esp God’s law.

What he is saying, then, is that the church is governed by the surrounding culture and isn’t an agent of change.

The culture made me do it.

Not an impressive display of future pope-hood.

And yet the UN are in a large part encouraging the downfall of morality by promoting all sorts of evil such as homosexuality all over the world. I would be interested to know if the UN big wig sees the irony.

Some catholics here bring it on themselves

Like the thread today proclaiming folks who did not follow the Pope were following Satan

In any event this cardinals honesty is refreshing

More candor than heard here over that grand tragedy

Really? Interesting. I know that the vast majority were Italian, with a few other nationalities mixed in. I recall there being a few from North Africa, but these were not Black Africans (i.e., sub Saharan)

“He may be stating the obvious, but that won’t stop anti-Catholics and bitter ex-Catholics from ripping him over these comments— or even just using the opportunity to rip into the Church in general.”

Really; the media wants the Church to allow deviants into their ranks, only to rip the Church apart when they do what deviants do. It reminds me of the banks being strong-armed by the government to give mortgages to unqualified minorities, then being accused of exploiting unqualified minorities with lending schemes...

“Disagree with his premise. There’s probably just as many gay priests in Africa, but when kids are abused by them, they probably keep their mouths shut for fear of being called gay too (just like happened in this country for many decades).”

I don’t think so, and for the same reason that the number of Hispanic victims in the US scandal was so low: the fathers would have a duty to kill the offender (and they would do it). In much of Africa merely a rumor of homosexuality can lead to someone being beaten or in some cases killed; they know it is not just a violation of God’s Law, but they also blame them for AIDS.

Many of the US victims had no father; chances of that in Africa are smaller as well.

They were from the Roman/Vandal kingdoms of North Africa, as black as South African Boers; liberal American Catholics pretend we had black popes to sell the faith to blacks, but I don’t believe we’ve had one yet.

I would like to have one, from one of the African countries where Muslims routinely persecute & kill Christians; they know the real deal, and will lead the Church in the cultural war the current hierarchy (excluding Benedict XVI and a few stalwarts) won’t fight.

My father’s response would have been more, er, immediate. The “priest” would have had a visit, then trouble talking or eating for weeks.
