I think this decision by the Catholic Church on whom is the new Pope could have massive world wide consequences.
I think this will be a turning point for the whole world.
Regardless of whether or not you believe the Catholic Church is the actual true Church of God on the earth, the Catholic Church does have world wide influence.
I believe that a liberal friendly Pope would be devastating to the world as a whole. It may very well end up splitting the Catholic Church and the world would slip further into moral darkness.
In this day and age the line between good and evil is clear. There is no straddling it any more. The contrast is too great.
My personal feeling is that this decision by the Catholic conclave is for all the marbles.
Catholic or not I think we should all be praying for them to pick a strong moral conservative leader.
Take it to the bank the Cardinals will not go for a lib.
Abortion, same sex marriage, women priests, will not progress. Married priests?
“Old timers”? LOL! I think I’m one of those........I’ve been on FR forever, it seems.
I believe that a liberal friendly Pope would be devastating to the world as a whole... Catholic or not I think we should all be praying for them to pick a strong moral conservative leader.Probably they'll pick an activist who will do a lot of travel to, for example, Muzzie countries, to do outreach and "reconciliation" with Muzzies, based on alleged similarities in so-called social justice views among the various faithful.
The only thing on that list that's even negotiable is ordaining married men to the priesthood.
The other things are matters of infallible teaching (ordaining women) or fundamental natural law and sacramental theology (so-called "gay marriage"). No Pope can change them, any more than he can make square circles, or make things fall up.
**Catholic or not I think we should all be praying for them to pick a strong moral conservative leader.**
BTTT!
O God, eternal shepherd, who governs your flock with unfailing care, grant in your boundless fatherly love a pastor for your Church who will please you by his holiness and to us show watchful care.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.
First two things on this list cannot change. They are the "matter" of a Sacrament; established by God, can't change any more than one could repeal the Law of Gravity.
Married priests? Of course. There were married priests, from the beginning, have always been married priests (somewhere in the Universal church, not necessarily in the West), are married priests now, and will be married priests in the future. I myself don't want to see celibacy dumped, and don't think they'll do it, but I'd love to see more emphasis on married deacons.
I think the late Abp Samuel Ruiz of Chiapas, who ordained 300 married Mayan deacons and trained 20,000 catechists, was right, FWIW.
"The Catholic Church in the past has changed doctrine based on social need... therefore it's not without precedent. It could happen..."
You'll want to re-word that. The Church has changed customs; canon laws; disciplines; emphases; styles; cultural applications... but not doctrines.
That is to say, doctrines can be broadened, deeped, clarified, elaborated, re-worded, emphasized or de-emphasized, but can' t be "changed" (in the sense of "declared false"). They're for all time.
