Enlighten me please because I want to understand.

Why all the excitement about a new Pope?
Why all the excitement before a name is announced?

Why all the excitement about a new Pope?

This man is 266th in an unbroken line of successors to St. Peter. Essentially, he is the "vicar of Christ" on earth. He is a spiritual father for all of us. His first title is Servant of the servants of God.

The word pope actually means "papa". The excitement is with everyone wondering which of the 115 cardinals was elected. A papal election is not like a secular one. It is just the reverse; none of the cardinals wants to take on this tremendous responsibility. The one elected is asked: "Do you accept"? Once he does, he gives up the service he gave in his previous post and now takes a new name.

Now Raindrop, don’t rain on everyone’s parade. Use your noodle as to why everyone is excited, in particular Catholics. History is being made. The world’s oldest Christian religion. Got it?
