Church Celebrates 2nd Amendment, Kids Make Pop-Tart Guns During Sunday School

This past Sunday, a Chicago area church sponsored a Second Amendment Sunday filled with “assault” pop-tarts, “combat” cupcakes and a sheet-cake that featured a chocolate semi-automatic Glock handgun with a quote from Jesus that read “Blessed are the peacemakers.” John Kirkwood, Pastor of Grace-Gospel Fellowship in Bensenville Illinois said the idea came to him after reading a column by Doug Giles entitled “Christian Parents Should Have Their Kids Play With Toy Guns.”

“Giles has a way of exposing the absurdity of the left,” said Kirkwood, “his article was in response to some Pastor from St. Louis and his ‘toy gun’ buyback program. That and the news about 7 year olds getting suspended for threatening pop-tarts and menacing cupcakes led me to stand up for true American values and the Biblical wisdom that underlies them.” The Pastor, referring to two recent cases in which a pop-tart shaped like a handgun and cupcakes topped by plastic soldiers brought on what many felt was over-the-top school discipline, decided to respond in kind.

I don’t think I’d be comfortable with my church doing this. I’d prefer they focus on winning souls instead of political arguments.

Wonderful. We need more affirmations of faith and common sense.

I’m with you. This is using the Lord’s church for political reasons. My heart tells me He is not pleased by this.

It looks like a silly stunt for a church to do, but shouldn’t a believer’s faith influence their politics?

The second amendment is the last line of defense for our freedom of religion. It is more than just “politics” to me.

Of course your beliefs should influence your politics. But this is a case of politics being injected into the church. I think any time the church is distracted from its primary mission it becomes less effective.

any church that spends time having their children do this instead of learning Christ example is not a church. They should have the tax exempt status revoked immediately. Plus the pastor, elders and deacons need a good swift kick in the behind.

Christ said that your weapon is more important than the shirt on your back.

Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take [it], and likewise [his] scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one. Luke 22:36

I also quote Jesus in my tagline.

They are just following the cues that have come from the Vatican over the years when they delve into other worldly issues. When you have Pontiffs talking about protecting the Earth from global warming or the social inequalities, what do you expect other Christian churches to do?

Too many churches have fell into social erosion due to the heavy push to "normalize" the abnormal. They make too many concessions to society instead of trying to make society conform to His Word. I've watched it happen from top to bottom in my 60 years and there is no sign it is getting better. Then again, I don't expect it to get better - He has spoken and we WILL continue down into the cesspool that will exist before He comes back to set thing right.

Well spoken, politics or war is what it is regardless of the weapons used.

In fact the weapons the socialists are using have already been proven to be far more dangerous than guns, and these weapons have been used in Church for many years.

I somewhat agree, but where would you say a good example of a church could be found, is teaching the right to keep and bare arms as bad as teaching socialist doctrine?

Many Churches are of the belief that America is a nation under God, being so, what is wrong with upholding the second amendment?

There are also many Churches teach against drinking or smoking in any amount and to leave guns alone, is that really what Jesus taught?

“I think any time the church is distracted from its primary mission it becomes less effective.”

I agree. The mission of a church is to introduce people to Jesus Christ. Jesus said I am the Truth. Rebuking dangerous lies that demonize guns (and their owners) is a righteous cause.

Their methodology might be questionable, but their message is not. Protecting the integrity of the second amendment is just as important as freedom of religion.

I can think of many political issues (like building a road) that would be a waste of church resources, but not in this case.

Demonizing an innocent, generalized group of people like the left is doing today with the TEA party and gun owners is as evil as Nazism, and it should be rebuked by all those who cherish Truth.

What about Jeremiah Wright’s TUCC? This country is full of apostate churches teaching Marxism is various forms. Rebuking them online is a far better use of bandwidth than criticizing what this church did.
