Stephen Hawking lays out case for Big Bang without God

PASADENA, Calif. — Our universe didn't need any divine help to burst into being, famed cosmologist Stephen Hawking told a packed house here at the California Institute of Technology Tuesday night.

Many people had begun queuing up for free tickets to Hawking's 8:00 p.m lecture, titled "The Origin of the Universe," 12 hours earlier. By 6:00 p.m. local time, the line was about a quarter-mile long.

A second auditorium and a Jumbotron-equipped lawn, which itself was jammed with an estimated 1,000 viewers, were needed to handle the crowd. At least one person was observed offering $1,000 for a ticket, with no success.

Stephen Hawking began the event by reciting an African creation myth, and rapidly moved on to big questions such as, Why are we here?

He noted that many people still seek a divine solution to counter the theories of curious physicists, and at one point, he quipped, “What was God doing before the divine creation? Was he preparing hell for people who asked such questions?”

After outlining the historical theological debate about how the universe was created, Hawking gave a quick review of more scientific cosmological explanations, including Fred Hoyle and Thomas Gold’s steady-state theory. This idea hypothesizes that there is no beginning and no end and that galaxies continue to form from spontaneously created matter.

Hawking said this theory and several other ideas don't hold up, citing recent observations by space telescopes and other instruments.

After giving a brief historical background on relativistic physics and cosmology, Hawking discussed the idea of a repeating Big Bang. He noted that in the 1980s, he and physicist Roger Penrose proved the universe could not “bounce” when it contracted, as had been theorized.

Hawkings may be a genius but he is also a fool.

I know they all have problems. Problems attract physicists.

Apparently the inflation aspect of BB started falling apart when they started analyzing the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe data.

Again, kind of talking over my head here.

Atheists fail to understand that having faith does not magically prevent a person from wanting to know about the universe around us.

This is certainly true of the Catholics and Jews with whom I've conversed.

It is true of some Protestants also.

But fundamentalist young-earthers? Ummm.....nope.

Is the universe expanding? There’s some serious questions about that. Understanding of the red shift has always been sketchy.

Especially since the human concept of cause and effect is just that--a concept, useful for everyday human thinking, but a concept that may have no basis in reality.

All we have are concepts. We measure their usefulness by their correlation with observed experience. We build axioms and logical arguments from this.

Hawkins uses logical arguments - albeit with a very uneducated view of theology. So it is entirely proper to engage his arguments logically as well. And the prime mover/first cause argument is still a good one.

Hawking discussed the idea of a repeating Big Bang

How did the first repetition start and what was before that?

Whatever problem Hawking has with "before God" is not solved by this theory either.

We started with that. 5000 years ago. Can we build on that now?

Anyone who really seeks the truth will see evolution has been discredited Hawking will not debate the best creation scientist who offered large sums of money to debate. He arrogantly says they are beneath him.

My grandfather died of ALS. It was hard to see such a fine, proud man brought low and suffer so much. His last audible words? “Father, forgive me all my sins.”

"And so, Dr. Hawkins, what do you suggest it was like a few seconds BEFORE the Big Bang? Your theory suggests there was nothing. And so, what do you suggest caused it to go from nothing to something?"

Hawkings forwarded a theory about that as he discussed on History channel program, "Through the Wormhole". He claims that protons have been shown to appear out of nothingness. He extrapolates that the universe could have developed out the same nothingness. Quite a leap.

First, I'm not sure that protons have been actually proven to just appear. Secondly, what about neutrons, electrons, and other sub-atomic particles that have yet to be theorized to just poof into existence? Did they all just happen out of nothingness?

I have no knowledge of physics, but I do know that much of it is theory on a white board. Here's a question for Hawkings: How did the so-called "singularity" (super dense) ball of matter that exploded into the "big bang" originate? Where did the neutrons, electrons, photons, neutrinos, quarks, hadrons, et al come from?

I am not a religious person, but there is something so mind-bending behind the universe that even children realize it. Physicists can do their equations all day and find some answers through math, but I don't think mankind will ever know what caused the "singularity". I don't believe it just happened. If it did, then there is some validity to the idea there are multiple universes. But then what made them happen? I actually feel bad for theorist physicists.

They are like astronomers and astronauts who so desire contact with other sentient beings. Doubt we will make contact in our own Milky Way galaxy, not to mention the billions of other galaxies in the universe. That said, I do believe other sentient beings do exist. The odds are in their favor, especially that we are now finding other planets circling stars with out latest technology.

The problem is distance for contact. Radio waves that diminish? No. Light waves that could transport a message, possibly. Blackholes and wormholes would suck in everything, it their theories are correct. That leaves a dimension that we are unaware of.

"Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist. It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the universe going."

Well, that certainly explains it. It's as difinitive as anything Al Gore would say...about anything.

Hawking always seemed quite interesting to me. Still, it's hard to believe he has sycophants so fawning that anyone would swoon over nonsense like this.

"Therefore, time began at the moment of singularity, and this has likely occurred only once, Hawking said. The age of the universe — now believed to be about 13.8 billion years — fits that model, as the number and maturity of observed galaxies seem to fit in the general scheme."

All that Hawkins knows proceeds from God through natural revelation which is as much divine in origin as the Sacred Scripture and Tradition. God established the Sacred Tradition and Sacred Scripture to reveal those things not discoverable in nature or from human reason.

The irony is that Hawkins is unwittingly a proponent of the Trinity. When God created the universe, when He imagined Himself, it was with complete harmony and order. That perfect order is the Logos that St. John spoke of.

Peace be with you

So sorry about your grandfather. My point was that, if Dr. Hawking were healthy, he would be just another obscure and unknown cosmologist.

"There wasn't any time before the Big Bang."

That may be so in YOUR religion, other religions don't have such a belief.
