Pope Francis to Canonise 800 Italians Slain During Historic Siege [by Muslims]

Pope Francis is preparing to canonise an estimated 800 Italian laymen killed by Ottoman soldiers in the 15th century. The canonisation service will be on May 12 in St Peter’s Square and it will be the first carried out by the Pontiff since he was elected in early March.

The killing of the martyrs by Ottoman troops, who launched a weeks-long siege of Otranto, a small port town at the most eastern tip of southern Italy, took place in 1480.

When Otranto residents refused to surrender to the Ottoman army, the soldiers were ordered to massacre all males over the age of 15. Many were ordered to convert to Islam or die, but Blessed Antonio Primaldo, a tailor, spoke on the prisoners’ behalf. “We believe in Jesus Christ, Son of God, and for Jesus Christ we are ready to die,” he said, according to Blessed John Paul II, who visited Otranto in 1980 for the 500th anniversary of the martyrs’ deaths.

Primaldo inspired all the other townspeople to take courage, the late Pope said, and to say: “We will all die for Jesus Christ; we willingly die so as to not renounce his holy faith.” They were not “deluded” or “outdated,” Blessed John Paul continued, but “authentic, strong, decisive, consistent men” who loved their city, their families and their faith.

The skulls and other relics of the martyrs currently adorn the walls around the altar of Otranto Cathedral as a memorial to their sacrifice. According to the archdiocese’s website, popular tradition holds that when the soldiers beheaded Primaldo, his body remained standing even as the combatants tried to push him over. Legend has it that the decapitated man stood until the very last prisoner was killed, at which point Primaldo’s body collapsed next to his dead comrades

Wow, I was under the impression that Pope Francis was dedicated to not doing anything that could possibly offend Muslims.

Kudos to Pope Francis. Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. Renaissance Europeans had no politically correct illusions. They had an inherent realization and understanding that Islamic culture and religion was simply incompatible with Western civilization. The historic battles at Malta, Vienna, Grenada and Lepanto were grim reminders of this fact. Its good to see those heroic Italians remembered and honored. It is also time for the West to admit that massive Muslim immigration has been a catastophre.

Probably just a few million less than Communism. Over 90 million.

Lepanto was a result of King Filipe I/II agreeing to provide the strength of the Spanish fleet to the various fleets of the Catholic League (nations fronting the Mediterranean). The purpose was to punish the Turkish navy sufficiently to cause the Turks to resume trade with the West.

He more than succeeded and the Turks did not ever recover from what amounted to the total destruction of their navy.

Worth noting that this former King of England who'd sent more than one Armada against Elizabethan England, was able to wipe out the Turks with remarkable ease. They were on their way down as empires go ~

Later on his son would divide America among the great powers in Europe ~ more or less ~ including Russia! Took another century, and the Spanish empire began it's long slide towards irrelevance. By the end of the 1700s the British Empire was on top. By the end of the 1800s the United States was near the top, and would arrive by 1950 ~ and actually acquired Turkey as an Ally, as well as Spain, France, Italy, England, etc. ~ in brief by 1950 the issues of the 1400-1940 period were resolved.

Sometimes our perspective is not God's perspective.

Matt 10:28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

Perhaps the greater tragedy is the number of Muslims who have been deluded by this cult and have died without being reconciled to God through Jesus Christ.

Right, 270 million seems to be the consensus:

Source

Tears of Jihad

These figures are a rough estimate of the death of non-Muslims by the political act of jihad.

Africa

Thomas Sowell [Thomas Sowell, Race and Culture, BasicBooks, 1994, p. 188] estimates that 11 million slaves were shipped across the Atlantic and 14 million were sent to the Islamic nations of North Africa and the Middle East. For every slave captured many others died. Estimates of this collateral damage vary. The renowned missionary David Livingstone estimated that for every slave who reached a plantation, five others were killed in the initial raid or died of illness and privation on the forced march.[Woman’s Presbyterian Board of Missions, David Livingstone, p. 62, 1888] Those who were left behind were the very young, the weak, the sick and the old. These soon died since the main providers had been killed or enslaved. So, for 25 million slaves delivered to the market, we have an estimated death of about 120 million people. Islam ran the wholesale slave trade in Africa.

120 million Africans

Christians

The number of Christians martyred by Islam is 9 million [David B. Barrett, Todd M. Johnson, World Christian Trends AD 30-AD 2200, William Carey Library, 2001, p. 230, table 4-10] . A rough estimate by Raphael Moore in History of Asia Minor is that another 50 million died in wars by jihad. So counting the million African Christians killed in the 20th century we have:

60 million Christians

Hindus

Koenard Elst in Negationism in India gives an estimate of 80 million Hindus killed in the total jihad against India. [Koenard Elst, Negationism in India, Voice of India, New Delhi, 2002, pg. 34.] The country of India today is only half the size of ancient India, due to jihad. The mountains near India are called the Hindu Kush, meaning the “funeral pyre of the Hindus.”

80 million Hindus

Buddhists

Buddhists do not keep up with the history of war. Keep in mind that in jihad only Christians and Jews were allowed to survive as dhimmis (servants to Islam); everyone else had to convert or die. Jihad killed the Buddhists in Turkey, Afghanistan, along the Silk Route, and in India. The total is roughly 10 million. [David B. Barrett, Todd M. Johnson, World Christian Trends AD 30-AD 2200, William Carey Library, 2001, p. 230, table 4-1.]

10 million Buddhists

Jews

Oddly enough there were not enough Jews killed in jihad to significantly affect the totals of the Great Annihilation. The jihad in Arabia was 100 percent effective, but the numbers were in the thousands, not millions. After that, the Jews submitted and became the dhimmis (servants and second class citizens) of Islam and did not have geographic political power.

This gives a rough estimate of 270 million killed by jihad.
