POPE Francis has been embroiled in a scandal after footage emerged today appearing to show him giving a man an exorcism in St Peter's Square.

The astonishing incident between the Pontiff and the person in a wheelchair, took place immediately after Pentecostal mass on Sunday May 19.

The video shows how a priest leans across the boy or young man to tell Francis something, at which point the Pope’s expression becomes more serious.

The Pontiff then grips the top of the subject’s head firmly and is seen pushing him down into his wheelchair.

As this is happening Francis recites an intense prayer, and the boy’s mouth drops wide open and he exhales sharply.

Francis’s usual smile then returns and he continues with the traditional and more gentle Sunday greetings for sick or disabled visitors to St Peter’s.

La Repubblica newspaper this morning quoted an exorcism expert has saying: “It was a prayer of liberation from evil or even a real exorcism.”

The leading Roman exorcist Father Gabriele Amorth, said: “Francis is also the Bishop of Rome and like all bishops he’s an exorcist.”

The new Pope has made it quite clear since his election that he believes the Devil, whom refers to as “the Enemy” and “The Prince of this World” is a real force that needs to be fought constantly.....

Fan? He's not a pop celebrity, fool. Wow, they caught a Catholic priest doing something within his purview. How "controversial!"

It’s called the Anointing of the Sick.

How is this a "scandal"?

I guess if you don't believe in the Devil, or evil spirits, or Exorcism (an authorized rite of the Church), it might be.

But the Holy Father clearly believes (he preaches about it regularly) and as a bishop he is authorized to perform exorcisms.

The Sun is being even more idiotic than usual here.

And notice the phrase “embroiled in a scandal”...The media always does this crap, I am SO sick of it..If it has to do with Christianity it’s “controversial” a “scandal” or if someone has a gun, even if it’s legal and used for hunting they are immediately branded a “gun nut”. But liberals supporting the murder of millions of babies? Oh that’s “a womans right to choose” and if you are against that you are a participant in the “war against women”. How many media outlets on TV besides Fox news publicized the case of serial killer Kermit Gosnell? Not ONCE did I see anything of that mentioned on the main stream networks.

embroiled in a scandal

Pope obsessed with devil(as stated in other media reports.)

A holy priest casts out a demon. This is scandalous? The Pope insists the devil is real. This is an obsession?

What is truly scandalous is that the Church since Vatican II has been afraid to remind the world the devil exists and to fulfill her role in casting out his minions.

God bless Pope Francis for shaking us out of our complacency.

Actually, the Anointing of the Sick (f/k/a Extreme Unction) is a different rite. You can spot it by the anointing of the hands with holy oils.

This obviously wasn't the full-fledged major exorcism, but could have been an exorcism prayer. There are several that are part of the ritual - one that is very ancient, called "St. Anthony's Brief":

Ecce Crucem Domini
Fugite, partes adversae
Vicit Leo de Tribu Juda
Radix Jesse, Alleluia

Behold the Cross of the Lord!
Flee, hostile powers!
The Lion of the Tribe of Judah,
The Root of Jesse, has conquered, Alleluia.

(you can use that one yourself in times of need)

In other words, the Pope is Catholic.....shocking!

The peculiar thing about the idiots of the press is not that they are idiots, but that they think they are smart. They prove themselves time and time again to be the stupidest people on earth but behave as if they are wise. It would be hilarious except for the power they wield to help elect morons such as themselves to political office.

"A holy priest casts out a demon. This is scandalous?"

Most of today's media is written from the same point-of-view as CS Lewis's Screwtape Letters.

"Strange ritual?"

It sounds like a simple laying-on of hands, or prayer for healing. An exorcism is a complex ritual that isn't done on the spot or without a thorough evaluation of the person to be exorcised.

Sometimes, when you push someone’s head down, it causes it to pop up and release neck and/or back tension. Watching the pope makes me wish he’d push my head down too. Clearly, he has good and knowledgeable body sense and hands. Can be a rather sophisticated technique. You go, Francis.

That’s right. The message is that the Pope is “caught” being “strange.” Those Catholics and their mumbo-jumbo exorcisms .. . . .

It’s called the Anointing of the Sick.

Incorrect. That was not the Anointing of the Sick. The Sacraments require proper form and matter per the rubrics.
