the problem is education sometimes takes the ability to reason and transforms it into the ability for rationalization

While some that I have known are OK, a lot of the PhDs that I have dealt with are not even smart enough to understand that they ought to take a bath more often than once every week or two, let alone put on clean clothes before they come to work.

Libs:
The more I learn, the smarter I am than other people.

Conservatives:
the more I learn, the more I learn I how much I have yet to learn.

Libs:
Men and women are basically the same and are just smarter animals.

Conservatives:
Men and women are similar as people, but fundamentally different at their core, and both are made in the image of God, their Creator and Sustainer.

Libs:
When I think a new thought or idea, nobody else has ever thought my brilliant, original thought ever before.

Conservatives:
There is nothing new under the sun. Old ideas get a new paint of coat or wording slapped on them and are trotted out as “original” and “novel”.

Libs:
People are basically good.

Conservatives:
People are basically bad. We have to spend far more time teaching kids to be nice and play nice and share, and get over this “me me me” self centered universe. If people were generally nice we wouldn’t need mountains of laws, thousands of courts, judges and lawyers, millions of cops and soldiers, tens of millions of guns, and hundreds of millions of locks and alarms and cameras.

I dated a Serbian PhD and found her to be a whole different animal than the American academics. She pointed out that American academics tend to insulate themselves and never speak to anyone outside their social class so they never face disagreement and can’t really cope with it.

Obviously there are exceptions but my brother in law is a perfect example of the American version. Just the other day my sister was telling me that her husband can’t handle conflict. His parents were college professors and all their friends were college professors so he never had any contact with us “lesser beings” and is often shocked at the little things we do they he would pay someone to do.

It is no proof of a man’s understanding to be able to affirm whatever he pleases; but to be able to discern that what is true is true, and that what is false is false, this is the mark and character of intelligence. — Emanuel Swedenborg

I once did some work for a man who had 3 PHDs, along with multiple MAs and BAs. He didn’t bother getting out of his pajamas during the day. I asked what he did for a living. He chuckled, and told me of his degrees. Then he said, “Watch this.”

He sat down at a typewriter, wrote half a page, and faxed it to about two dozen universities. He informed me that those universities will each send him a check for about $2K for “...sharing my advanced knowledge with them, because I’m a learned man. Ain’t that a hoot?”

Libs:
There are no moral absolutes.

Conservatives:
There are moral absolutes. Murder is always wrong. Taking God’s name in vain is always wrong. Lying so that an innocent person is punished for something they didn’t do, is always wrong. Unjust persecution of people by individuals, groups, or government, is always wrong.

Libs:
All moral systems are equal and therefore you cannot say one moral system is any better than another.

Conservatives:
All moral systems are not equal and some are far better than others. What if I adopted a moral system that said it was totally acceptable to kill anyone that didn’t agree with me? (ie stalinist communism, pol pot communism, castro communism, mao communism)

A PhD knows more and more about less and less.

...greater independent thought...

Spewed coffee over my shirt on that one. Academic PhDs are butt-smooching automatons. Confusion comes because PhDs are frequently awarded to independent thinkers AFTER they have made some breakthrough.

What I have more often found (in myself, as well as in others) is that the knowledge acquired puffs up the mind of the PhD, making him feel wiser and more in touch with the truth of things than his less educated fellow mortals.

That's a fair observation. Some of the most arrogant jerks on FR are doctors.

The fundamental difference between women and men is that men don’t understand women.

The more you forget, the less you know; so why study? The less you study, the less you forget. The less you forget, the more you know; so why study?

I am one of an endangered species - conservative Ph.D.. I don't argue with liberals, waste of my time.

I don't argue with friends or family relations. I don't have a desire to “make” someone agree with me.

Years ago, I had a friend who had enough intelligence to make really big mistakes. I enjoyed her company and she talked all the time. Usually, it was about her various family members and I enjoyed hearing her interpretation of her family. I had no desire to correct her mistakes, I just let it roll off and enjoyed her for what she was.

However, I had another friend who was a stickler for fact and she had an incurable desire to force her way of thinking on everyone. When the three of us were together, the stickler got infuriated every time because she had to convince the talker that she was wrong and the talker wasn't getting it - she just talked longer and refused the logic of the stickler.

I didn't interfere, I just let them go at it, knowing in the end, each would be exactly like she was before it started.

The talker had strange takes on life. One day she said, “I always keep a lot of cash in the house in case a family member gets arrested and needs bail. The jail doesn't want to take checks.”

Inside myself I was laughing. It was just like her to think that and prepare for that event. I suppose at some time in her past, a family member had been arrested for something. Do you have cash set aside in case you get arrested and need cash for bail? That had never crossed my mind.

I enjoyed both of those ladies, but it was war when they got together.
