Q. My co-worker, who is a pastor in a local church, gave me a whole bunch of handouts that he received at a training session. (The session was in preparation for a temple open house in our area.) He gave them to me and asked me to respond, but I dont know where to start.
A. (by Allen L. Wyatt) Thank you for sending the materials so I could look at them. They are the normal shotgun approach that we see among many anti-Mormons. They take everything they can, load it into a series of documents, and then fling it at people hoping that something will stick. The documents you received cover Joseph Smith, prophets, grace vs. works, the Book of Mormon, the endowment, blacks and the priesthood, racism, the First Vision, polygamy, the place of faith, whitewashing history, scholarship and the Church, the endowment, unrighteous dominion, etc.

True.
I was attempting to be brief......glad you added to the post, thanks.
Did I cite passages not applicable to the Holy Spirit? Do you not believe that the Spirit blows where he wills? Do you not believe that he gives what he wishes to whomever he wishes? Do you not believe that he is given when asked?
...that asserts that God fills...
Fills? I said the Spirit does as he pleases. How much or how little he gives is his business, as I said. John 16:8-9 tells us that it's the Holy Spirit's role to convince/convict hearts to believe in Christ. Does your church have any former LDS members? If so, how did those folks convert unless they first had some action of the Holy Spirit and were docile to his leading? Unless the Spirit is at work in some way no unbelievers would ever convert. But we know that many nonChristians do, therefore we know that the Spirit was active in them in some way. Filled is a relative amount. What matters is what we do, accept or reject what the Spirit offers of himself, not the amount (i.e. "filled"). In other words, obedience and docility, not quantity, if you understand my meaning.
YOU believe the Holy Spirit dwells in false religions.
I never said that either. I said I believe in the Holy Spirit's action in SOULS receptive to him. Whether he "dwells," prompts, inspires, or [insert verb of your choice] isn't really my concern. Scripture says his job is to convict so I trust he knows how to go about his business outside of Christianity as well as inside it. As I said above, no one from a false religion could convert to Christianity without his action.
Church was fabulous, thanks :)
Bye Sandy, and since the very existence of the LDS is an insult and a spit in the face of all of Christendom your snit ring a tick hollow..
It IS???
Resty (or whomever typed this) you KNOW that it's MormonISM that is indecent and disrespectful...
Shotgun?
That’s a new one!
Why would anyone want to?
So kind of you to point this out.
Now you'll need to either agree with what your Leaders have said in reply #184, repudiate what they've said, or merely ignore what was posted and hopoe that no lurkers saw it.
Of course!
Mormonism instills a victim mentally in it's members.
You are unable to defend the Satanic influence in your chosen religion; so you cry "PERSECUTION!!!"
Good luck.
OOOOOoooh!
Can't defend Mormonism; so let's attack the messenger.
Maybe we’ve been barking up the wrong tree?
That's strange; considering THESE quotes from your leaders:
What Joseph Smith Means to Us (From: various sources )
"He (Joseph Smith) is the man through whom God has spoken... yet I would not like to call him a savior, though in a certain capacity he was a god to us, and is to the nations of the earth, and will continue to be."- Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses 8:321"You call us fools; but the day will be, gentlemen and ladies, whether you belong to this Church or not, when you will prize brother Joseph Smith as the Prophet of the Living God, and look upon him as a god..."- Herber C. Kimball, Journal of Discourses 5:88"If we get our salvation, we shall have to pass by him [Joseph Smith]; if we enter our glory, it will be through the authority he has received. We cannot get around him [Joseph Smith]"- (as quoted in 1988 Melchizedek Priesthood Study Guide, p. 142)There is "no salvation without accepting Joseph Smith. If Joseph Smith was verily a prophet, and if he told the truth...no man can reject that testimony without incurring the most dreadful consequences, for he cannot enter the kingdom of God"- Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation, vol. 1, p.190"I tell you, Joseph holds the keys, and none of us can get into the celestial kingdom without passing by him. We have not got rid of him, but he stands there as the sentinel, holding the keys of the kingdom of God; and there are many of them beside him. I tell you, if we get past those who have mingled with us, and know us best, and have a right to know us best, probably we can pass all other sentinels as far as it is necessary, or as far as we may desire. But I tell you, the pinch will be with those that have mingled with us, stood next to us, weighed our spirits, tried us, and proven us: there will be a pinch, in my view, to get past them. The others, perhaps, will say, If brother Joseph is satisfied with you, you may pass. If it is all right with him, it is all right with me. Then if Joseph shall say to a man, or if brother Brigham say to a man, I forgive you your sins, "Whosoever sins ye remit they are remitted unto them;" if you who have suffered and felt the weight of transgressionif you have generosity enough to forgive the sinner, I will forgive him: you cannot have more generosity than I have. I have given you power to forgive sins, and when the Lord gives a gift, he does not take it back again."- Orson Hyde, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 6, p.154-155"It is because the Lord called Joseph Smith that salvation is again available to mortal men.... If it had not been for Joseph Smith and the restoration, there would be no salvation,"- Bruce McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, p. 396, 670
They succeeded in killing Joseph, but he had finished his work.He was a servant of God, and gave us the Book of Mormon. He said the Bible was right in the main, but, through the translators and others, many precious portions were suppressed, and several other portions were wrongly translated; and now his testimony is in force, for he has sealed it with his blood. As I have frequently told them, no man in this dispensation will enter the courts of heaven, without the approbation of the Prophet Joseph Smith, Jun.Who has made this so?Have I?Have this people?Have the world? No; but the Lord Jehovah has decreed it.If I ever pass into the heavenly courts, it will be by the consent of the Prophet Joseph. If you ever pass through the gates into the Holy City, you will do so upon his certificate that you are worthy to pass. Can you pass without his inspection? No; neither can any person in this dispensation, which is the dispensation of the fulness of times. In this generation, and in all the generations that are to come, everyone will have to undergo the scrutiny of this Prophet. They say that they killed Joseph, and they will yet come with their hats under their arms and bend to him; but what good will it do them, unless they repent? They can come in a certain way and find favor, but will they?Brigham Young,--JOURNAL OF DISCOURSES, vol. 8, p. 224
BOTH are a danger to one's SOUL.
Uh... WHY did you FAIL to tell about your OTHER 'scriptures'?
The world KNOWS what Mormonism thinks of the KJV of the bible!
The Articles of Faith outline 13 basic points of belief of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The Prophet Joseph Smith first wrote them in a letter to John Wentworth, a newspaper editor,
in response to Mr. Wentworth's request to know what members of the Church believed.
They were subsequently published in Church periodicals.
They are now regarded as scripture and included in the Pearl of Great Price.

And what do you think of their theology?
OH?
Then WHY has NOTHING ever been 'revealed' from the great battle that took place on Hill Cumorah?
The Nephites gather to the land of Cumorah for the final battlesMormon hides the sacred records in the hill CumorahThe Lamanites are victorious, and the Nephite nation is destroyedHundreds of thousands are slain with the sword. About A.D. 385.
1 And now I finish my record concerning the destruction of my people, the Nephites. And it came to pass that we did march forth before the Lamanites.
2 And I, Mormon, wrote an epistle unto the king of the Lamanites, and desired of him that he would grant unto us that we might gather together our people unto the land of Cumorah, by a hill which was called Cumorah, and there we could give them battle.
3 And it came to pass that the king of the Lamanites did grant unto me the thing which I desired.
4 And it came to pass that we did march forth to the land of Cumorah, and we did pitch our tents around about the hill Cumorah; and it was in a land of many waters, rivers, and fountains; and here we had hope to gain advantage over the Lamanites.
5 And *when three hundred and eighty and four years had passed away, we had gathered in all the remainder of our people unto the land of Cumorah.
6 And it came to pass that when we had gathered in all our people in one to the land of Cumorah, behold I, Mormon, began to be old; and knowing it to be the last struggle of my people, and having been commanded of the Lord that I should not suffer the records which had been handed down by our fathers, which were sacred, to fall into the hands of the Lamanites, (for the Lamanites would destroy them) therefore I made this record out of the plates of Nephi, and hid up in the hill Cumorah all the records which had been entrusted to me by the hand of the Lord, save it were these few plates which I gave unto my son Moroni.
7 And it came to pass that my people, with their wives and their children, did now behold the armies of the Lamanites marching towards them; and with that awful fear of death which fills the breasts of all the wicked, did they await to receive them.
8 And it came to pass that they came to battle against us, and every soul was filled with terror because of the greatness of their numbers.
9 And it came to pass that they did fall upon my people with the sword, and with the bow, and with the arrow, and with the ax, and with all manner of weapons of war.
10 And it came to pass that my men were hewn down, yea, even my ten thousand who were with me, and I fell wounded in the midst; and they passed by me that they did not put an end to my life.
11And when they had gone through and hewn down all my people save it were twenty and four of us, (among whom was my son Moroni) and we having survived the dead of our people, did behold on the morrow, when the Lamanites had returned unto their camps, from the top of the hill Cumorah, the ten thousand of my people who were hewn down, being led in the front by me.
12 And we also beheld the ten thousand of my people who were led by my son Moroni.
13 And behold, the ten thousand of Gidgiddonah had fallen, and he also in the midst.
14 And Lamah had fallen with his ten thousand; and Gilgal had fallen with his ten thousand; and Limhah had fallen with his ten thousand; and Jeneum had fallen with his ten thousand; and Cumenihah, and Moronihah, and Antionum, and Shiblom, and Shem, and Josh, had fallen with their ten thousand each.
15 And it came to pass that there were ten more who did fall by the sword, with their ten thousand each; yea, even all my people, save it were those twenty and four who were with me, and also a few who had escaped into the south countries, and a few who had deserted over unto the Lamanites, had fallen; and their flesh, and bones, and blood lay upon the face of the earth, being left by the hands of those who slew them to molder upon the land, and to crumble and to return to their mother earth.
16 And my soul was rent with anguish, because of the slain of my people, and I cried:
17 O ye fair ones, how could ye have departed from the ways of the Lord! O ye fair ones, how could ye have rejected that Jesus, who stood with open arms to receive you!
18 Behold, if ye had not done this, ye would not have fallen. But behold, ye are fallen, and I mourn your loss.
19 O ye fair sons and daughters, ye fathers and mothers, ye husbands and wives, ye fair ones, how is it that ye could have fallen!
20 But behold, ye are gone, and my sorrows cannot bring your return.
21 And the day soon cometh that your mortal must put on immortality, and these bodies which are now moldering in corruption must soon become incorruptible bodies; and then ye must stand before the judgment-seat of Christ, to be judged according to your works; and if it so be that ye are righteous, then are ye blessed with your fathers who have gone before you.
22 O that ye had repented before this great destruction had come upon you. But behold, ye are gone, and the Father, yea, the Eternal Father of heaven, knoweth your state; and he doeth with you according to his justice and mercy.
Your typist is doing quite well today.
“Did I cite passages not applicable to the Holy Spirit?”
You cited scripture applicable to the Holy Spirit, and then made a logical leap that they are applied to polytheists and other assorted groups who deny the essentials of Christianity. I asked you, twice, whether or not the Holy Spirit dwells within Mormons who believe in these heretical things. You then started on a discussion on the Holy Spirit as if to say YES, which at this point seems utterly off topic since now you correctly refer to “former” LDS, which presumably is something you see as a positive thing. (Being FORMER LDS, that is, rather than remaining so.)
I don’t actually disagree with you on the role of the Holy Spirit in converting unbelievers. It is better to say that the Holy Spirit is the primary, and, really, the only agent in conversion.
Be careful in interfering, however, in threads exposing the LDS, or Jehovah’s Witnesses, or any other group that holds beliefs you agree is damnable. There is no salvation outside of Jesus Christ, and all these religions preach a perverted Gospel that is the exact opposite of what Christ Himself preached.
OUCH!
