Thanks Cronos for the ping, nice GGG topic. Assad's been killing Syrians (to the tune of 93,000 so far, including plenty of Christians, over two years; a tiny fraction have been jihadists from outside the country), and is himself a jihadist, so I hope he hangs on another couple of years, we need them to whittle each other down. Unfortunately, the Turks later gained suzerainty over Romania and ultimately absorbed it into their empire. It would not be until the later part of the 19th century that they would win freedom from the then “sick man of Europe.”
