Hey Remember When Polygamy Had Nothing to do with Gay Marriage? Yeah Well...
Creative Minority Report ^ | June 27, 2013 | Matthew Archbold

Posted on 06/28/2013 7:16:07 AM PDT by NYer

Traditional marriage advocates have long argued that once you establish that marriage is simply a contract between consenting adults, polygamy is a necessary logical outgrowth. And every time we attempted to raise this point, others explained to us to shutup.

Well, it seems that shutup time is done as polygamists are celebrating The Supreme Court's decision as well.

Buzzfeed reports:

The Supreme Court’s rulings in favor of same-sex marriage Wednesday were greeted with excitement by polygamists across the country, who viewed the gay rights victory as a crucial step toward the country’s inevitable acceptance of plural marriage.

Anne Wilde, a vocal advocate for polygamist rights who practiced the lifestyle herself until her husband died in 2003, praised the court’s decision as a sign that society’s stringent attachment to traditional “family values” is evolving.

“I was very glad… The nuclear family, with a dad and a mom and two or three kids, is not the majority anymore,” said Wilde. “Now it’s grandparents taking care of kids, single parents, gay parents. I think people are more and more understanding that as consenting adults, we should be able to raise a family however we choose.”

“We’re very happy with it,” said Joe Darger, a Utah-based polygamist who has three wives. “I think [the court] has taken a step in correcting some inequality, and that’s certainly something that’s going to trickle down and impact us.”

Noting that the court found the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional because the law denied marriage rights to a specific class of people, Darger said, “Our very existence has been classified as criminal… and I think the government needs to now recognize that we have a right to live free as much as anyone else.”...

But polygamists in the United States, where bigamy is a crime, have taken cues from the marriage equality movement, and the few public champions of the lifestyle have deliberately positioned themselves as libertarian-minded gay rights advocates as well. Following gay rights activists’ lead, polygamist families — like the Browns, with their TLC reality show Sister Wives, and the Dargers, who came out with a book last year — have come forward to convince the American public that their lifestyle can be wholesome and normal...

“I’m not a fortune-teller, but it seems like if more people are accepting of gay marriage, it would follow that polygamist marriage wouldn’t be criticized quite so much.”
Anita Wagner Illig, a leading polygamy activist, told U.S. News & World Report that gay-rights campaigners had set a welcome precedent. "We polyamorists are grateful to our brothers and sisters for blazing the marriage equality trail," she said.

So when we talk about gay marriage meaning the destruction of marriage, we kinda' mean it.

It won’t just be one man and multiple wives, Old Testament style, it will be polyamorous with multiple spouses of both sexes all shacked up. The whole thing is a mess, and there is no way to fight it once it is ruled that there is a constitutional right to marry anyone, which is most surely coming.

For most of history and even in many cultures today, girls are married off at 12 or 13 and in some cases even as young as 8.

Let's not forget that Mohammed married a 6 year old. He waited until she was 9 to have sex though.

I recall group marriages and gay stuff/societies (usually cast in a negative light but not always) in sci-fi, but I can’t recall any that postulated “gay marriage.” I wonder what the first sci-fi story was that mentions ‘gay marriage’ specifically, did it come before or after the concept was thought of in real society. I wonder if there was any sci-fi story that predicted ‘gay marriage’ would actually be recognized in western society before group marriages.

Anybody who couldn’t see that slope is blind. It was completely obvious to me.

And, after the polyamory types will come the pedophiles and beastialists. After that, my imagination fails me. But, hopefully, I won’t live that long.

God forgive us.

there is no way to fight it once it is ruled that there is a constitutional right to marry anyone, which is most surely coming.

At this point, the way to fight it is to take the libertarian stance of getting government out of the marriage licensing business. The culture shift is too great to force by law a return to traditional marriage between one adult male and one adult female.

Let the entire Miami Heat basketball team "marry" or "civil unionize" each other by written contract with optional religious ceremony if they want...but don't grant government benefits or impose different tax rates based on relationship status.

If there's a relationship dispute, resolve under the terms of the underlying contract.

Possibly Harrison’s “Forever War.” But, by the end of the book, EVERYBODY was gay and heteros were considered deviants, so they might have skipped that...

They will be pushing for it, and anyone who objects? ‘Islamaphobic’!
They have the race-homo grievance schtick down pat.

Don’t worry, when Sharia law is implemented, they will be hanging homos from cranes, just like in Iran. And it will be so easy. They will have marriage registrys to lead the way.

They are laughing over this one in Riyadh, Mecca, Medina, Cairo, and Bagdad.

Wouldn;t be surprised if the Muslim “community” in America urged our politicians to vote for this one PRECISELY because they KNEW the ramifications.

Anne Wilde, a vocal advocate for polygamist rights who practiced the lifestyle herself until her husband died in 2003

Wouldn't that mean she'd need to practice harder?

I chalk it up to either intentional deception,
or the arrogance of Humanism.

The latter is explained thusly:
Humanism’s primary tenet is that people know right and wrong for themselves, and those alive today know right and wrong better than those in the past, so today’s judgment of right and wrong is correct.
The blindspot is that there will come humanists tomorrow that see the judgement of today’s humanists as incorrect.

For some reason, they can’t see this.

That must be the difference.
I tend to look back to tradition for what is right or wrong, not the whims of popular culture. I wince every time I see “the wisdom of children breaking with tradition” meme blasted at me on TV. Makes most TV pretty much unwatchable.

Humanism is a religion that began with the words
“you will be as gods, knowing good and evil”.

And liberalism is based on that religion and the assumptions thereof.

Thanks, that’s like mid 70s. I’ve never read that, the only Halderman I recall are some war stories in anthologies, can’t even remember the stories. Do you recall if he used ‘gay marriage’ as a term? I see from wiki almost all of humanity eventually goes gay, actually sounds pretty interesting, if horrific.
