“So was the poor man a martyr?”

Did any of the Apostles get killed because they had the Nazereth Expositor destroyed for exposing their systematic sexual abuse of women? And during their death did they fight their way out with gunfire while screaming a Masonic plea for help?

So was the poor man a martyr?

Well...#1...how many other armed prisoners firing off weapons in other settings have been deemed as "martyrs?"

Beyond that...see my conjecture in post #17.

Because it also comes down to how much a given guard may have known that Smith & Co. were armed with two loaded weapons...loaded weapons that Mormon historians conceded were in possession of Smith (with one being fired off)...just a concession you NEVER see Lds top leadership emphasize -- or even mention -- in their tours of the Carthage jail they own...or in their writing/speaking of Smith's death.

This is info deemed as not "faith promoting."

In some parts of the country, “he needed killin’” is a valid defense.

No saying I would wish that on most folk.

(So does having two armed weapons as a prisoner)

(Why...just ask any prison guard!)

The secular view, written at the time, is that Smith died because the Mormons were not politically monolithic.

#1...At one point in the early 1840s, Smith's Nauvoo, IL built-up Mormon community was at large -- or larger -- than Chicago was at the time.

#2...In 1844, Smith himself had declared himself a candidate for POTUS...something he wouldn't have done if he was dealing with political rivalry in Nauvoo...which he really didn't have.

I really couldn’t care less about Joseph Smith. I was being sarcastic and it seems some took my bait.

Yeah. Now imagine a prisoner in a modern prison arming himself with two loaded weapons. A "response" from the prison guards wouldn't be less than an "all-out response." And just because such an armed prisoner, who gets 6 shots off might not be a "real guard-stopper" with such weaponry, doesn't mean that Smith wasn't a real life-and-death threat in that scenario.

Smith had his own large "militia" in Nauvoo among every-day people. Likewise, prison guards weren't a large contingent of people. Their "back-ups" would be the equivalent of a volunteer fire dept in a rural area.

A guard who felt threatened by a prisoner with loaded weapons, with murderous Smith bodyguards on the loose like Porter Rockwell (one who Mormons celebrate his b-day today, I believe)...and a well-armed militia who could act on behalf of Smith...I could at least see why some vigilantes would have felt threatened -- and certainly whatever guards were there could have felt so threatened.

#1...At one point in the early 1840s, Smith’s Nauvoo, IL built-up Mormon community was at large — or larger — than Chicago was at the time.

In that Chicago was founded in 1833, population 350, this is not saying much. By 1840, over 4,000, ninety-second most populous city in the United States.

#2...In 1844, Smith himself had declared himself a candidate for POTUS...something he wouldn’t have done if he was dealing with political rivalry in Nauvoo...which he really didn’t have.

Not in Nauvoo, but in the entire state. And seriously, if you’re going to vie to become POTUS, running as an independent, having yourself declared king shortly thereafter is probably not going to help.

Why did Joe Smith die so young:

Given the number of wives he had, it’s conceivable he just wanted to...

I did not neglect to mention the allegations from mormons, I choose not to.

You might want to talk to all your anti friends and get your story straight, then. A lot of them keep mentioning the mob.
