Andrew Sullivan: Religion OK with divorce, why not same-sex marriage?
Breitbart TV ^ | 6/30/2013

Gay commentator Andrew Sullivan on Sunday CNN’s Fareed Zakaria: “I would say the religious arguments are more based in fear than in the actual teachings, that they’re based upon stray texts that actually don’t mean what you think they mean. Jesus himself only said one thing about marriage, which is that you can’t divorce. We live in a country were countless people are divorced and that doesn’t seem to threaten the religious liberty of Catholics. It’s as fundamental an issue.”

I garbled my #20; I think readers can figure out which words should have gone in the last paragraph.

"I would say the religious arguments are more based in fear than in the actual teachings, that they’re based upon stray texts that actually don’t mean what you think they mean. Jesus himself only said one thing about marriage, which is that you can’t divorce."

Sullivan got it all wrong, even what Jesus said on divorce.

[Matthew 19:8-9] He (Jesus) said to them, “Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, permitted you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery.”

Jesus said divorce is permitted in limited circumstances, but only for the specific sin that Sullivan is advocating: sexual immorality. I don't know what he was thinking, but this "stray text" clearly does not mean what Sullivan thinks it means. It's also not fear that leads to a strong emotional reaction against perversion (except in a prison). It's revulsion at an unnatural act, one that is naturally efficient at spreading disease.

Rom 1:20-32
(20) For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
(21) Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
(22) Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
(23) And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
(24) Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
(25) Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
(26) For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:
(27) And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
(28) And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
(29) Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
(30) Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
(31) Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:
(32) Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

We are much too accepting of divorce, but you won't see many churches in the US willing to kick out divorced members.

I hope Christians sit up and take notice that this is where acceptance of divorce, contraception, and masturbation ultimately lead a society....

You are correct! But why would Sullivan know anything about Catholic doctrine and practice?

So what is happening today has been foretold. It is occurring because God is allowing it to occur. Human’s bent nature is becoming less constrained. I believe we are on a path akin to ‘the days of Noah’ with the results being a wee bit more permanent.

What a fool. If you read Matthew 19,the first 12 verses you find that Jesus said a lot more about marriage than that no divorce should be allowed. His positive teaching roots the union of a man and woman in creation. Nothing of what Our Lord Said is compatible with Sullivan’s assertion.

The Catholic Church does not accept civil divorce. It is why there must be a Church annulment that proves that the marriage was never valid in the first place.

Having said that, I do believe that the acceptance of divorce (generally speaking) was one of the precursors to the legalization of gay marriage. One part of the slippery slope that is the ruin of traditional families.

I guess you missed that whole Henry VIII thing in history? Many pseudo religions have their roots in the rantings of a tyrant king who wanted a divorce.

I just did some reading in the book of Mathew on what Jesus said about marriage. The Book says Jesus was explicit as to ‘marriage’ between a man and a woman. Sullivan apparently tries to say Jesus was aware of same sex marriage. This is in no way what Jesus spoke about and is another showing how homos will lie and obfuscate to make their point.

I would agree. IMHO the 50 shades of gray moral relative nuance evidenced in many institutions that at one time taught clearly in black and white is a result of incremental compromise of truth in pursuit of false peace,

Divorce was decided before I could vote Andy. I did not get a choice on that either.
