Francis, who as Jorge Mario Bergoglio was archbishop of the Argentine capital until his election as pontiff in March, reportedly objected to the statue because he is against the cult of personality.
He telephoned Catholic clergy at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Buenos Aires to request that it be removed immediately.
The life-sized statue, which was installed about 10 days ago, depicts Francis in a white cassock and skull cap, smiling and waving with his right hand.
Local people have been posing for photographs next to it ever since it was erected.
Francis is also reportedly appalled by plans by the Catholic Church in Buenos Aires to build a museum which would display some of his personal artefacts from when he was archbishop.

Good for him.
Senator KKK Byrd, rat of WV, he’s not.
Good! One of the things I really did not like about JPII was that he actually encouraged a cult of personality. I travel a lot, and i found that everywhere that JPII visited, there was a statue of him installed practically the next day - in some cases paid for by himself. I saw a church on Malta that had TWO statues of JPII - one erected by a Maltese organization and the other one paid for by him.
Look for more to go up now that he is going to be declared a saint.
This is kind of an interesting Pope.
May not be exactly what the establishment had bargained for...
The article describes Francis as “The Jesuit Pope.” He is a pope who happens to be from the Jesuit order. Geesh.
IMO he shoulda protested to get this one removed first (not the same statue, btw):
So much for an appearance at Madame Tussauds any time soon.
What IS that thing??
He payed for statures of himself? Wow.
A good starting point by Francis. While I like the emphasis on Pope JP II’s good points and his life’s work, in some parts of Poland it’s going a bit too far, negating his work even. When the aura around a personality exceeds that person’s deeds and work, it’s not good.
Please share your research on statues paid for by JPII. Quite surprised and would like to see the proof of your claim.
I saw it on the base of the statues,
That one should be removed on the grounds of sheer ugliness.
