Our Loving Father,

'Our Help is in the Name of the Lord, Who Made Heaven and Earth.' (Ps.124:8) We Worship You, Father, and Thank You for Your Kindness and Grace. May Everyone who Comes to these Threads be Blessed through the Power of Your Name. 'They that Trust in the Lord shall be as Mount Zion, which cannot be Removed, but Abideth Forever.' (Ps.125:1)

Our Merciful Savior, our Military Men are Ever in our Hearts. May Your Lovingkindness Daily Surround them, and Jehovah's Power Keep them Safe. May Each Man Look to Jesus as his Salvation, his Hope, and his Life. May Every Man Walk in the Ways and Precepts and Character of Jesus Christ. For our Troops we Pray Numbers 20:17, 'We will Go Along the King's Highway; we will not Turn Aside to the Right Hand or the Left.'

Our Abba So Kind, we Ask for Spiritual Renewal for our Sinful Land. May Many Souls be Granted Faith, and Drawn to the Heart of Your Son. Please Forgive America for her Transgressions, and Spare us from Judgment, through Grace. 'O Israel, Trust in the Lord; for He is their Help, and their Shield.' (Ps.115:9)

Our Gracious Master, we Pray for our Brethren who are Suffering throughout the Earth. May Your Church be Comforted, Lord, and Filled with Your Spirit and Peace. 'The Lord hath been Mindful of us, He will Bless, He will Bless the House of Israel.' (Ps.115:12)

Thank You for Hearing us, our Lord of Compassionate Love. In Jesus' Name, for the Glory of the King of kings, amen.

The Winding Road
July 11, 2013

In his book A Sweet and Bitter Providence, John Piper offers these thoughts about God’s providence and guidance: “Life is not a straight line leading from one blessing to the next and then finally to heaven. Life is a winding and troubled road. . . . God is not just showing up after the trouble and cleaning it up. He is plotting the course and managing the troubles with far-reaching purposes for our good and for the glory of Jesus Christ.”

The Jews journeying to Jerusalem for the annual feasts (Deut. 16:16) had the assurance of knowing that the Lord was plotting their course and managing the winding and troubled roads for them. They expressed this assurance in Psalm 121, a pilgrim song. The question, “From whence comes my help?” did not express doubt but affirmation in the Lord who rules supreme (vv.1-2). Unlike a guard who sometimes slumbered, or the god Baal who needed to be rustled out of his stupor (1 Kings 18:27), the Lord was fully alert and secured the journey of His people with providential care (vv.3-4). The Lord, who rescued Israel, would continue to help, preserve, and walk with His people.

Life is a winding road with unknown perils and troubles, but we can be certain of God’s providence, security, and care.

Dear Lord, sometimes life seems to be full of
perilous and winding roads. Thank You for giving
us the assurance that You have our course plotted
and are watching over our every step.

Troubles are unknown; God’s providence is certain.

IN THE COLDEST and darkest days of the American Revolution, General George Washington raised his prayers for the survival of his beleaguered Army and of the new Nation. The Lord answered those prayers, upheld his Army through a punishing nadir to everlasting Glory, and bestowed His manifold benefits upon the new Nation.



FROM THE BRAVE, albeit weary, ill-equipped, and untrained volunteers who straggled into Valley Forge on 19 December 1777 arose, with the help of some gallant friends from across the waves, the cohesive fighting force that became the United States Army, global defender of Freedom and scourge of Tyrants.



AS GENERAL WASHINGTON lifted his prayers on high in that bleak Winter, let our prayers now rise like a fountain for our Heroes in the American Armed Forces who seek to secure the benefits of Freedom on behalf of a people hungry for them. Father, look on our prayers for them with favor, guide their steps in righteousness and envelop them in the shelter of Your Healing Wings. Bless and uphold them in the performance of their Mission. Through Jesus Christ, Your Son, with the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever, Amen.
